VietNamNet Bridge – The 11th annual KOVA Awards honoured 4 groups and 12 individuals for their outstanding contributions to the fields of applied science and technology and social welfare in 2013 at a ceremony held yesterday, Nov 3.

Vice State President and Chairwoman of the KOVA Awards Committee Nguyen Thi Doan highlighted the KOVA Awards by recognising contributions made to the country in study, work, production and scientific research, praising the outstanding contributions made by the 132 people honoured at the event.

In the field of applied science and technology, awards went to a group from Hue Central Hospital led by Prof. Bui Duc Phu for successfully transplanting a heart from a brain-dead donor, marking new heights in surgical techniques for the country.

Doctors from the HCM City Medical and Pharmaceutical University’s Odonto-Stomatology Faculty received awards for their successful research on dentistry implants that have benefited more than 800 patients over the past 5 years.

Awards were also presented to staff from the Yen Bai Women’s Union for their fertiliser research and its successful application in terraced farming, thereby helping to eradicate hunger and reduce poverty for the ethnic and minority people of Yen Bai Province.

A group from Quang Ninh Crop Plants Company received an award for their successful selection of 10 national rice varieties designed to boost productivity and economic effects in many areas of the country.

In addition to the group awards, seven individual awards for applied science and 27 individual student awards for outstanding contributions to society were handed out, along with KOVA scholarships for 89 other individuals.

Established by the KOVA Paint Group in 2002, the awards aimed to encourage students, individuals and groups, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, to pursue advances in the areas of science and technology, and social welfare.
