Vietnam wins Asia-Pacific Robot Contest 2014
Vietnamese students won the Asia-Pacific Robot Contest 2014 over last year champion – Japanese team in India at 6 p.m. (Vietnam time) on August 24.
18 teams from 17 countries and territories attended the final round at Balewadi Stadium, including Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Hong Kong (China), Bangladesh, Egypt, Fiji, Iran, Mongolia, Nepal, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Russia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
The Vietnamese team defeated the Japanese team after 45 seconds to gain the championship title this year.
Besides, Vietnam won another award for the best team in the tournament. Points of this award were counted through absolute victories of robots.
Lac Hong University has been on behalf of Vietnam to attend the contest for 5 times and this year it crowned the champion.
French-brand smartphones marketed
Digiworld Joint Stock Company, the authorized distributor of France’s smartphone brand Wiko in Vietnam, has introduced Wiko products to local consumers with retail prices starting from VND1.5 million.
All the Wiko products are made in China and this is why many European customers consider Wiko belongs to a Chinese firm because it has no factory in France.
David Garcia, international director of business development at Wiko, said the brand was founded in France and important processes of the product like research and development, design and marketing are done in the European country.
Garcia said Wiko has its products made in China where there are a large number of phone accessory suppliers to create a price advantage.
Garcia described Vietnam as a market of great potential as the market segment of smartphones is expanding rapidly and young consumers account for most of the population.
He quoted sources as saying that Vietnam’s mobile phone market grew nearly 30% in the first half of this year compared to the same period last year and smartphone sales jumped 54% year-on-year in the period.
VN smartphone software to save data usage
A Vietnamese smart phone is now offering Opera Max software that can compress data by up to 50 per cent compared with the limited 3G packages available now.
Now available in Mobiistar’s Black Diamond Prime508 model, it will only be uploaded on Viet Nam’s Google Play after three months.
The software allows users to easily manage their mobile data usage and enjoy video clips with less buffering than usual.
Nearly 70 per cent of videos on 2G and 3G networks in Viet Nam have to buffer.
This is the second highest rate in Southeast Asia after only Myanmar, where it is over 88 per cent.
SAP Innovation Day showcases IT solutions
Over 150 customers and partners gathered yesterday at SAP Innovation Day – New SAP in Ha Noi to hear how SAP is helping companies become innovative by simplifying their IT environments.
The event featured a comprehensive showcase of SAP’s innovative solutions, such as Mobility, SuccessFactors, Profitability and Cost Management (PCM), HANA and In-memory computing.
In addition, there were four special tracks, including Finance, HR, Technology and Mobility, designed to help participants gain deeper insights into SAP’s innovative offerings so they can manage, decide and run their businesses better.
Microsoft IT Academy debuts in central region
The Microsoft Information Technology (IT) Academy, the first ever international standard IT training centre in the central and Central Highlands regions, made its debut in ceremonies held yesterday.
During the ceremonies, Microsoft Viet Nam and the Da Nang University, joint partners in the project to launch the training centre, also signed a deal on comprehensive co-operation in IT development.
The deal includes the setting up of a data centre on private cloud and applications of Microsoft 365 for educational centres in the region and the boosting of the university’s Software Development Centre as the Microsoft-authorised education reseller and member of Microsoft IT Academy.
The university trains 85,000 students from the central and Central Highlands provinces and cities.
Vietnam topple Japan in int’l Robocon finals
The Lac Hong University Robocon team on August 24 triumphed over their Japanese rival to take out this year’s International Robocon contest in Pune, India.
The contest attracted 18 teams from 17 countries and territories, including two teams from India and remaining teams from Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Bangladesh, the Republic of Korea and Russia.
This year’s contest, organised under the theme “A Salute to Parenthood”, saw top performances from Vietnam, Japan and Indonesia. Vietnam also overcame Hong Kong, Bangladesh, Egypt and Indonesia to set up a finals clash with Japan.
This is the fifth time the team has represented Vietnam at an international contest and claimed prizes.
Israel, Vietnam to share security experience
The Israeli Economic and Trade Office and Embassy in Hanoi and the Vietnam Information Security Association (VNISA) will meet in Hanoi on August 28 to discuss homeland security solutions.
The conference is expected to attract Israeli leading experts and groups, such as speaker Avi Shavit, and IAI, Verint and Imperva companies introducing network security solutions and research and development programmes on homeland security.
The conference is designed to boost cooperation and offer trade opportunities for businesses from two countries.
Experts said that Vietnam is facing a number of risks threatening security infrastructure and information safety. Applying new latest technologies and building capacity and human resources to deal with the above risks is an urgent need.
Radiology and nuclear medicine congress opens
The 16th National Congress on Radiology and Nuclear Medicine kicked off in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau on August 22.
Hosted by the Vietnam Society of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine (VSRNM), the event brought together a c rowd of domestic and foreign scientists, experts, lecturers, doctors and technicians working in image diagnose, and medical device manufacturers from many countries.
Organised annually, the event aims to share experience in applying radiation (X-ray) and nuclear medicine in image diagnosis, health care and treatment, while discussing orientations for promoting the use of methods in the future.
Reports presented at the two-day event focus on specialised fields of r adiology and nuclear medicine, neurological and interventional X-ray, and breast and heart image diagnosis.
An exhibition displaying latest technologies, medicines and devices in the field will be organised in the framework of the conference.
According to VSRNM President Dr. Pham Minh Thong, efforts made by the national medical sector along with support from its foreign counterparts will help better the public health care in the future.
Ministry endeavours to combat hi-tech crime
Hi-tech crimes have become more common than ever today due to the boom of the internet, heard a conference on combating hi-tech crime in Hanoi on August 22.
According to the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol), criminals using high technology cause annual economic loss of around US$400 billion, higher than the money that drug traffickers can earn.
The General Police Department on Crime Prevention and Control under the Ministry of Public Security reported that the police detected several major online gambling networks during the 2014 World Cup tournament involving tens of millions of USD.
Deputy Minister of Public Security Le Quy Vuong said the ministry has paid special attention to dealing with this type of crime which is developing more complicatedly under various forms.
Given that, he asked the public security forces to coordinate with the Ministry of Information and Communication and the State Bank of Vietnam to prevent money laundering activities, and assist the Government in controlling the operation of casinos.
