VietNamNet Bridge – Dozens of fauna and flora species listed in the World Red Book as Roosevelt’s muntjac, Amentotaxus yunnanensis (catkin yew) or Gekko cf. palmatus… have been discovered in the woods in Thanh Hoa province.



Endangered species, extinct species

The Roosevelt’s muntjac which was discovered in the Xuan Lien Nature Reserve had been considered extinct since 1929.

After two years implementing the conservation project in the nature reserves of Pu Luong, Pu Hu, Xuan Lien and Ben En National Park in Thanh Hoa province, as of September 2014 scientists discovered nearly 1,000 species of rare plants and animals, including dozens of species named in the World Red Book.

At the Nature Reserve of Pu Luong, scientists have discovered an additional 20 species of fish, 98 species of insects, and 13 species of mammals.

At the Nature Reserve of Xuan Lien, they have recorded information of an additional 402 plant species, 25 mammal species, 56 species of birds, 14 species of reptiles, and 17 species of amphibians.

Especially, the Roosevelt’s muntjac which was discovered in the Xuan Lien Nature Reserve had been considered extinct since 1929.

Scientists have also identified nearly 8,000 species of animals and plants in the above nature reserves and national parks, including more than 1,200 species of animals and plants listed in the World Red Book and 324 species in the Red Book of Vietnam.

However, they have not seen over 900 species of animals and plants that had been ever found in the above nature reserves and national parks.
