“Fire” is a project conceived 8 years ago by two artists Pho An My and Dang Tue Nguyen. Sharing the desire of creating a new theatre language as combination between piano and Tuồng, My and musician Dang Tue Nguyen has collaborated to generate “Fire” based on Tuồng script by poet Luong Tu Duc.
The beauty and philosophical depth of Tuồng (traditional opera) has once again given pianist Phó An My and composer Đặng Tuệ Nguyên inspiration for a new and unique creative collaboration: a ”post-contemporary” work of chamber music written for the piano using the musical language and the dramaturgical materials of Tuồng, in which a modern instrument, the piano, and an ancient art, Tuồng, exist in parallel and independently, but at the same time complement and interact with each other.
The storyline of the opera is based on the script of “Ngọn lửa Hồng Sơn” (“Fire of the Red Mountain”). “Ngọn lửa Hồng Sơn” (“Fire of the Red Mountain”) is composed around the 17th century. It is based on the ancient opera “Tam nữ đồ Vương” (“Three women planning to steal the throne”) and reflects a turbulent historical period. Unlike other traditional operas, which recount struggles against foreign enemies, “Ngọn lửa Hồng Sơn” deals with a domestic conflict between two political forces, one progressive, the other conservative. The speed and intensity of its plot as well as the complexity and variety of its characters contribute to the status of “Ngọn lửa Hồng Sơn” as a shining achievment of Hue opera in particular and of Vietnamese opera in general, to be preserved as a timeless classic in Vietnam’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.

About pianist Phó An My
After her first public appearance in 2005 at L’Espace – Institut Françai de Hanoi, pianist Phó An My has repeatedly impressed domestic and international audiences. Born into a musical family, My began learning the piano at age five. At 13, she went to Berlin, Germany, to study at the Musikgymnasium Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and later at the prestigious Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin. She remained in Germany for eight years. After her study, My taught in China for a brief period of time.
Specializing in contemporary music, My tends toward a style which is both expressive and sophisticated, employing an unique improvisation technique. In 2005, My began to work on the idea of a musical discourse between Vietnamese traditional melody and Western modern instrumentation. Programs such as Phiêu Thanh (2008), Bồng Bềnh (2009), Khởi Nguyên (2010), Bóng (2011) all involved the use of Vietnamese traditional musical genres – Tuồng Tích, Hò Huế, Hát Cọi, Chầu Văn etc – which is characteristic of Phó An My’s musical personality.
About Đặng Tuệ Nguyên
Đặng Tuệ Nguyên started his professional career with Khúc Tuỳ Hứng (“Impromtu”) written for violincello and piano, which was chosen as one of ten works to be performed at the Young Composers’ Festival for Contemporary Music in Korea. Since 2005, Nguyên has been seeking to create a new musical language based on Vietnamese folk music. Nguyên’s works are often conceived as a conversation between the sound of the modern piano and the melodies of traditional Vietnamese music. Nguyên always tries to respect the old and to treat it on an equal footing with the new. His compositions are highly regarded by professional musicians for their sophisticated instrumentation as well as their clever mixture of Eastern and Western ideas. To create a musical conversation between East and West has been the objective of both Phó An My and Đặng Tuệ Nguyên, and this objective is obtained with particular success in the Piano-Tuồng, named Lửa (“Fire”).

You are invited to a jazz concert with Célia Mara. The program is within the framework of European Music Festival 2014.
Célia Mara is typically Brazilian… and Viennese: born and raised in the vale do Jequitinhonha in Brazil, she is now living in Vienna, Austria. At the root of her music lies a fusion of traditional Brazilian music, the rich Latino Culture and European underground instrumental grooves. She created “Bastard Sound” by surfing between musical styles and rhythms, playing effortlessly with Retro-Brazil, Tango and traditional Afro-Brazilian sounds, and mixing Nova MPB and Samba with Funk, Reggae, Balkan-Folk, Glamour Rock and Hip Hop. The lyrics, sung in Portuguese, English, German, Spanish and French, are urban poems that allow communication beyond borders.
She is an engaging front woman, who never fails to impress with her strong voice, her amazing vocal improvisations, her quick switches to beat boxing and – sometimes – trumpet solos. She plays her acoustic guitar with glamour, Brazilian rhythm and a lot of fun.
Together with her band, Célia Mara performed in hyped clubs in London, Moscow or Prague, but also in prestigious concert halls like the famous Vienna Opera House. They participated at huge Reggae-, Jazz-, Groove- or World Music Festivals throughout Europe and at Latin America’s biggest festival, Ollin Kan, in Mexico City. And now – for the first time – they will be bringing „Bastardista“ to Vietnam!

For more than 10 years the European Music Festival has been an important cultural bridge between Europe and Vietnam and it stands for musical diversity on the highest level. This year as the German contribution, the jazz band Tingvall Trio from Hamburg is performing on stage.
The Tingvall Trio has remained unchanged since 2003: Swedish pianist Martin Tingvall, double-bass player Omar Rodriguez Calvo from Cuba and German drummer Jürgen Spiegel. The interplay between the three different countries of origin gives the band a unique individuality. The trio has recently released its fifth studio album “Beat”. Between Nordic melodies and harmonies, the rocking rhythm of the drummer and the pulsing Cuban heartbeat explain the success story of the band.
Performances in well over twenty countries have triggered an enthusiastic resonance in specialist magazines like Jazzwise (UK) or Jazz Life (Japan). The Tingvall Trio has built up an audience which reaches far beyond the circles of jazz purists, mainly as a result of not shying away from popular music. The Tingvall Trio has twice been awarded the prestigious ECHO Jazz award in the category “Ensemble of the Year”, in 2010 and 2012. For selling more than 10,000 copies of the album “Norr” the trio received its third German Jazz Award in Gold in 2013. The ensemble is considered to be one of the top European jazz acts.
Tingvall Trio will hold a workshop in Hanoi for the young musicians of “JumpForJazz”, a talent-promoting project of Nguyen Bao Long, and will play a jam session with them in the courtyard of the Goethe Institute on 27th November. On the following two days the Tingvall Trio will perform concerts as part of the European Music Festival: on 28th November in Hanoi together with „JumpForJazz“ and 29th November in HCMC.

On the 22nd and 23rd of November, Echoes will be running a series of unique audio walks in Hanoi city centre. When you go on the walk, you’ll be hearing sounds as you walk around, but this is no ordinary audio tour, the sounds change according to your location. The way this is possible is through utilising location technologies – GPS – built into mobile devices.
Echoes has commissioned two artists, one from Vietnam – Lương Huệ Trinh, and one from Denmark – Hans Sydow, to create two immersive audio experiences for Hanoi and Copenhagen. They’re working together to create an incredible sonic journey unlike any other. Let them lead you on an extraordinary trip through the city centre and hear places that you recognise through a fresh set of ears.
Expect to be surprised – this is not a normal audio tour! You might hear sounds of the city’s hidden past, stories by local residents, ambient environmental sounds conjuring a different space and time, even music performed by unseen musical troupes. We are offering you the opportunity to experience the city through sound.
Last year, the Hanoi Soundwalk was the first of its kind to ever run in South East Asia. The project ran in conjunction with 11 other cities around the world, as part of the larger Locative Audio project. This year, it’s growing in Hanoi to become a larger project. We’ve made a web app for Creators to make soundmaps online and submit them to the project, and we’ve built our own android app for users to experience the walks.
The walks in Hanoi are happening on the weekend of 22-23rd November. We’ve got a limited number of places so make sure you sign up as soon as possible. Just follow this link to sign up.
The Echoes team will also be running workshops in the week prior to the walks with students of Đom Đóm, the contemporary music group to create their own soundmaps.

We face typography every day and everywhere, whether it is in our daily life or at work, on a billboard, in the newspaper or on the smartphone. “Whether the letters are small or big, bold or with serifs, whether they are red or green, all the things that we see will have an impact on us unwittingly and we will memorize them without noticing it”, said Erik Spiekermann (typographer and design legend, awarded with the TDC Medal 2011). That is the reason why we should have a more wittingly look at typography. A perfect occasion to do this is the annual exhibition of the Type Directors Club, where the best and most interesting designs of the year in the field of typography and graphic design will be shown.
The Type Directors Club invites everyone to attend a public showing of its sixtieth annual typography exhibit, TDC60, and the selections of the annual typeface design competition, TDC 2014 at the Goethe Institute Hanoi.
There was a total of over 2000 entries from 43 countries, 209 works from 18 countries were selected. Germany with its more than 40 honorees ranked in a high position in comparison to the other international participants this year. The winners will also be included in 7 exhibitions touring cities in the United States, Canada, France, England, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Spain, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam.
The annual awards competition of the Type Directors Club presents the best typographic designs in the world. Long a favorite of the design community, the awards are renowned for the quality of their selections and the accompanying annual book published by the TDC.
The exhibition addresses all professionals and students who work in the field of graphic design, advertising, marketing, communication, multimedia, publisher, education and who are interested in the written word.

Film Screening “By Choice or Chance”

Director Peter J. de Vries first described the concept for the movie “By Choice or Chance” for Producer Marijn Poels, who then joined him in bringing the film to life. They created a powerful documentary grounded in the strength of single mothers who face challenges from and bring change to Vietnamese society.
For generations, Vietnamese tradition has supported the belief that each family must have a husband and father who is the “pillar” holding the ‘house of the family’ together. This film’s story takes you from the heart of the fast moving city to the peaceful and traditional country life where old traditions and culture preserve these long held core values. The film shows how the realities of the lives of modern single mothers and their children often challenge these traditional values as the women struggle to find happiness and acceptance for their unconventional nuclear families.
“By Choice or Chance” is a beautiful, strong portrayal of three single mothers living in northern Viet Nam. They share the stories of their personal lives and the struggles they face as they try to find happiness for their children.

The Delegation of the European Union to Vietnam and seven Embassies of European Union Member States and European Cultural Centers are delighted to present the 13th edition of the European Music Festival in Vietnam.
The European Music Festival 2014 will showcase well-known talented musicians and singers from Austria, Wallonia-Brussels (Belgium), France, Germany, Luxembourg, Poland, Sweden as well as a guest band from Vietnam. With a total of sixteen concerts in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the festival offers Vietnamese audiences the prospect of experiencing different genres of music, including jazz, classic, contemporary and Vietnamese traditional music.
The festival will kick off in Hanoi on 22 November and in Ho Chi Minh City on 24 November and run until 5 December 2014 at the Youth Theatre in Hanoi and the Conservatory of Music in Ho Chi Minh City.

Italo disco is a genre of music which originated in Italy and was mainly produced at the end of the 1970s to mid-1980s. Italo disco fused Italian and foreign pop and dance music. Initially borrowing from hi-NRG and post-disco (accentuating the sounds of the former), it developed into a diverse genre. The genre employed drum machines, synthesizers, and occasionally vocoders and was usually sung in English.

You are invited to a music night with 4 impressive figures of the Japanese underground music scene, for the first time in Hanoi, together with MC Scars from France, and DJ set.
BASED ON KYOTO (BOK) is a Japanese dance music unit consisting of DAICHI, a DJ and producer, and MARRON, a guitarist for DUBDUB ON-SENG, Dubmarronics and Datenryu. BOK was formed in 2006 to search and create a groove that incorporates a very unique Japanese dynamic with a variety of other musical genres such as house, electro, ambient, dub, soul, jazz and rock. They’ve so far released four 12 inches and LPs.
Performing all over Japan, especially in Kyoto and Osaka, their name is well known in their home country’s vibrant electronic scene. They have performed alongside top artists including Theo Parrish, Idjut Boys, Filastine, Hifana, Juzu aka Moochy, A Hundred Birds, Kuniyuki, Kentaro Iwaki, Altz and Sayoko. Their track “Flower” was also added to the compilation album “4 Season” (2007) and later released in 12-inch vinyl, becoming an underground hit in the Japanese club scene.
“Flower” was also highly acclaimed overseas and Giles Peterson played the track for his world-renowned “Worldwide” programme onBBC Radio 1. BOK has just released a remix of the cross-genre hit “Calypso On-Seng” by Dubdub On-Seng this autumn.

Presentation “Perfumed Nightmare”
Introducing the work of Filipino filmmaker Kidlat Tahimik
This film is Kidlat Tahimik’s most renown essay film, whose release in 1978 was made possible with the assistance of Werner Herzog and Francis Ford Coppola.
After a lifetime in his somewhat backward hometown, Tahimik travels to Paris. His trip is motivated by his fascination with American technology (why he doesn’t go to America is typical of spontaneous nature of the storyline). Once in the City of Light, Tahimik is both fascinated by and disillusioned with the “wonders” of the modern world. The film has a delightfully spontaneous home-movie quality–literally so, since it was lensed in Super 8mm on a budget of less than $10,000.
The name Kidlat Tahimik immediately connotes contradiction. As an obsessive cultural observer, Kidlat has been exploring his inner cultural contradictions by making his non-commercial films since 1975. Born in 1942 as Eric Oteyza de Guia in Baguio City, he was raised in that American enclave resort town, situated in the heart of the tribal highlands of Igorot Culture. Three decades ago, he began questioning his American education, (a.k.a “my benevolent assimilation”). This had begun with his Maryknoll nuns in primary school; followed by further immersion in high schools in The Philippines with US curricula, ending up in America for a graduate degree (Wharton School MBA). After five years as an economist in Paris, he tore up his MBA diploma in 1972, tuned-in to commune-culture lifestyle, and embraced an anti-Hollywood school of filmmaking. As a self-taught filmmaker, his works are recognized at home and abroad for their primitive style and for their humorous deconstruction of his American education. In Baguio, he is an active artist (film, video-installation, performance), supporting the process/viewpoint of the undiploma-ed artists. In 1997, his Sunflower Film Collective embarked on a project to share user-friendly video technology with tribal people, with the aim that responsibility for cultural documentation rests in their own hands. He lectures at U.P. and Ateneo University, speaks at local/international conferences, contributes articles in Taglish to the Sunday Inquirer.
It is an extremely rare opportunity to hear one of the world’s most under-recognized Third Cinema Movement practitioners speak about his films – his motivations, choice of style, his influences and method of practice. His anti-colonial gaze, evident in his commentary and choice of subject, embraces a love of his culture and the importance of the local who he believes must not be goaded into the global race for ‘uniformity’ of value.

Kidlat Tahimik (b. 1942, Baguio City, The Philippines) is a pioneer of experimental film in Asia, practicing as a film director, writer and actor. His films are commonly associated with the Third Cinema movement – a film movement begun in the 1960s-70s in Latin America that denounced neocolonialism, the capitalist system and the Hollywood model of cinema as mere entertainment to make money. He is considered the Father of Philippine Independent Cinema, entering the international stage in the late 1970s with ‘Perfumed Nightmare’, a release enabled with the support of filmmakers Werner Herzog and Francis Ford Coppola. Tahimik’s work embraces the essayist form. He is considered a magician of the fragment with an aesthetic often described as whimsical, politically incisive and with a third-world self-consciousness.

The Hanoi Comedy Collective is a group intent on growing grass roots stand-up comedy in Hanoi. We have an ever growing roster of comedians and are always keen to find new comics that want to perform. We perform regularly to a backpacker crowd where we sharpen our skills and develop new material, and then every few months we host Tee-Hee in Tay Ho, a local comedy night that’s always a great show. The group also supports visiting comedians that come to Hanoi and are really excited that Nik Coppin is coming to town!
