VS-KEY USB

USB, or Universal Serial Bus, is an effective tool to store and copy data. However, the weak point of USB is that it could be a tool to spread malware, threatening the data security of the USB and computers which use USBs.

A report from BKAV Corporation, an anti-virus solution provider, says the number of computers infected with viruses in Vietnam in the third quarter of 2017 was 15 million. USBs are the major way viruses spread, accounting for more than 50 percent.

To settle the problem, scientists from the Electronics Institute have created a safe USB – VS-KEY.

A report from BKAV Corporation, an anti-virus solution provider, says the number of computers infected with viruses in Vietnam in the third quarter of 2017 was 15 million. USBs are the major way viruses spread, accounting for more than 50 percent.

The key feature of VS-KEY is that it is cannot be infected with virus, spyware, worm and Trojan House when using it to back up data on computers. It prevents unlicensed penetration from stealing information through spyware.

Automatic encryption occurs when copying data from computer to USB and automatic decryption when copying data from USB to computers.

The encryption and decryption process uses AES 256 encryption algorithm. Users’ passwords are  encrypted and saved on the USB. If users enter the wrong passwords 10 times, the USB will lock.

The software managing USB is in Vietnamese and user-friendly. It runs from a virtual CDROM, without having to set up driver.

The safe USB has capacity of 8GB and has structure like a normal USB with metal or plastic covers. VS-KEY is 60 x 20 x 8 mm and weighs 20g. It is compatible with all Windows operating systems, using USB 2.0/3.0 specifications.

According to Senior Lieutenant Colonel Tran Xuan Kien, VS-KEY is restructured to protect data with both hardware and software solutions. The hardware is designed and manufactured in Vietnam, while the management program is self-made and integrated into IC circuits. VS-KEY can’t be illegally intruded, even through the backdoor.

The USB is structured with three zones. Zone 01 is structured as virtual CDROM (read-only) containing specialized management software. Zone 2 contains password and Zone 3 has non-standard data storage format.

The safe USB has been used on a trial basis at units of the army. It has been operating well with a friendly interface, and is easy to use and effective in counteracting spread of virus and password detection software.

The creators of the USB have worked with TIC Computer and Networks Solution JSC to commercialize VS-KEY.

About 1,000 products have been ordered via TIC’s website. Each product is priced at VND880,000.
