The construction of a stadium with nearly 30,000 seats is underway in the city of Peyongchang.

Thirty years after the 1988 Summer Olympics, South Korea will host the 23rd Olympic Winter Games (9-25 February 2018) and the Winter Paralympic Games for Persons with Disabilities (9-18 March 2018), with the participation of nearly 3,000 athletes from nearly 100 countries.

The construction of a stadium with over 30,000 seats is underway to host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. According to Jihye Lee, Peyong Chang was chosen to host the Olympics because it is a mountainous city that is well suited to winter sports. The city is just over 100km from Seoul. This is a chance to introduce this beautiful city of Korea to the world.

The facilities for winter sports competition have been completed.

In preparation for the Olympics, South Korea has built a 30,000-seat stadium with a cost of US$78 million, many expensive facilities for winter sports, and a high-speed rail line from Seoul to Peyong Chang.

Also at the Olympics Games, South Korea will provide the first 5G internet service and modern robots providing information of the participants. In addition, the country will host a series of modern and traditional cultural events, indoor and outdoor cultural performances, so that Olympic participants can relax and understand the culture of Korea.

White tiger and black bear – the mascots of the 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics.

The most worrying issue at the 2018 Winter Olympics is the security situation on the Korean Peninsula. Recent moves from North Korea show that the risk of a war has not yet been reversed.

However, South Korean representatives said that South Korea would do its utmost to ensure the security of the Olympics. Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have existed for many decades, but South Korea has safely organized many major sporting events like the Seoul Olympics 1988, the 2002 World Cup, and three Asian Olympics.

The emblem of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea will open a series of major sporting events in Asia in the coming years, including the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and the 2022 Winter Olympics Games in Beijing.

The design of the emblem of 2018 Winter Olympics has its roots in Hangul, with the shapes that form the logo stemming from the first consonants of each syllable in the word “PyeongChang” when it is written in Hangul.

The first character in the emblem also represents a gathering place where the three elements of Cheon-ji-in – heaven, earth, and human – are in harmony. The second character symbolises snow and ice, as well as the athletes’ stellar performances.

Soohorang and Bandabi are the mascots of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Soohorang is a white tiger and Bandabi is an Asiatic black bear. The tiger is an animal closely related to Korean mythology, and is a symbol of trust, strength, and protection while the bear is symbolic of strong will and courage.
