Pham Van Nam, deputy head of Binh Thuan Province People’s Committee, on Tuesday, had a meeting with contractors and relevant agencies at the Vinh Tan Thermal Power Centre on environment protection.

Speaking at the event, Do Van Thai, deputy director of the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment, said that Vinh Tan 2 thermoelectric plant’s slag dumps were their most serious concern.

Senior Lieutenant Colonel Le Viet Thang, deputy director of the provincial police, said that upon investigation, the pollution at Vinh Tan Thermal Power Centre was found to be severe.

“Without an examination we can still tell how the surroundings are visibly contaminated,” he said.

On the construction of the Vinh Tan 4 thermoelectric plant, Thai asked investors to operate environmental surveillance cameras, separate treated wastewater discharge and not to discharge it into the same pipelines as the plant’s cooling water.

At Vinh Tan 1 thermoelectric plant, according to Thanh Nien (Young People) newspaper, instead of dumping waste mud into the sea, workers dredged more than 400,000cu.m of waste mud into the plant’s wharf for coal vessels.

However, Le Trung Truc, deputy head of Tuy Phong District People’s Committee, stressed on the terrible dust clouds emanating from Mai Xanh Brick Factory project and slag dumps of Vinh Tan 1 and Vinh Tan 4 thermoelectric plants. He urged investors to come up with solutions to resolve these dust clouds, especially before the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday.

Nam asked the project’s investors, constructors and relevant agencies to tighten management on pollution and prevent environment incidents during the holiday.
