Nearly 100 tonnes of rubbish have been washed up onto the beach at Danang City while the waste disposal company said they had too few staff to deal with the pollution.

Locals living along Nguyen Tat Thanh Street in Xuan Ha Ward said rubbish had been washed onto the 1km-long section of the beach in the past month. No one dares to swim at the beach and many tourists have left after the seeing the state of the beach. The majority of the rubbish is driftwood, nylon bags and plastic bottles.

A local said, “The beach was bombarded with rubbish for a whole month and yet no one has taken care of it. This beach used to attract many tourists but it has been deserted.”

Rubbish also causes difficulties for fishing and blocked sewers.

Tran Van Tien, vice director of Danang Urban Environment Company, said they did not have enough personnel and funds to clean the beach. Tien is asking for directives from the management boards of Son Tra Peninsula and Danang beaches.

According to the management boards, they have reported and asked for funds from the Department of Tourism and the Department of Natural Resources and Environment.

“We still haven’t had any fund so we can’t do anything yet,” Tien said.

He went on to say that the company did not deny its responsibility but the work was beyond their capacity. The company only has 10 employees to collect rubbish at a specific location so it can’t deal with the amount of rubbish washed up daily.
