VietNamNet Bridge – The landslides at Cua Dai seaside in Hoi An City in Quang Nam province are getting more serious. The state has poured hundreds of billions of dong to fight erosion, but the efforts have been futile.
The landslides are getting more serious
Cua Dai beach has been hit by serious erosion since the beginning of the rainy season. After the 12th storm, more than 1,100 meters of Cua Dai coast, consolidated with technical solutions (sheet pile and geobags), were swept away by strong sea waves.
Hundreds of billions of dong spent to protect the coast and the beach could not prevent the devastation of sea waves.

In areas of coastal restaurants, the strong waves swept through and caused serious landslides, despite solid embankments. In some places, the landslides caused large “frog’s jaw’. Many coconut and pine trees, tens of years old, were uprooted and swept away to the sea.
Local residents said the landslides at Cua Dai Beach began in 2009, but this year has been the most serious. The erosion intensity has been increasing and expanding towards the north of the coastal strip.
Vice Mayor of Hoi An City Nguyen The Hung confirmed that the sea invasion in the latest storm was serious, and went beyond the city’s capability.
He said that if there is no effective solution to prevent erosion, coastal tourist sites and services areas and households as well in Cua Dai area will be seriously affected.
As the landslide at Cua Dai tends to be serious, not only Hoi An authorities, but Quang Nam province and central agencies have joined forces to rescue the beach from being eliminated.
Many workshops from provincial to national levels have been organized in which scientists have suggested solutions.
In 2014, Quang Nam province decided to implement a VND55 billion project on building breakwaters and creating beaches in accordance with the Netherlands’ experience.
The Prime Minister has agreed to spend VND40 billion from the state budget to help Quang Nam fight erosion at Cua Dai.
Most recently, a dredging project on a 2.04 kilometer section of Cua Dai – Cu Lao Cham route was implemented. This aimed to get silt at the estuary to bank up the eroded Cua Dai coast.
In addition, restaurant owners and tourism service providers have spent hundreds of billions of dong to build more embankments and sheet piles. However, soon after a section of embankment is built, erosion occurs in other sections.
