The number of Vietnamese pupils who choose to study abroad after their high school graduation exams has been on the rise.

Lam Si Cuong, a former pupil of Tran Quang Khai High School in HCM City, said that he decided to go to Taiwan for his studies after the high school graduation exam.    

Cuong added that his plan to study abroad started when he was in Grade 12 and he was following in the footsteps of some of his friends.

My Van from Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School in HCM City intends to go abroad for her education. She said that many of her friends also had the same plan as her.

According to John Laxon, Education New Zealand’s Regional Director of India, SE Asia and Middle East, between March 2016 and March 2017, the number of Vietnamese young people who were granted study visas in New Zealand increased by 27% on-year.

In the first quarter of this year alone, the number of Vietnamese provided with Visa to study in New Zealand doubled against the same period of 2016. By late March this year, around 2,200 Vietnamese students studied in the country, he noted.

Meanwhile, the US’s Institute of International Education reported that over the past decade, the number of foreign students studying in the US has been on the sharp rise. In the school year of 2015-2016, some 1.1 million foreign students studied in the US.

Some 21,400 Vietnamese students are studying in the US, with Vietnam ranking sixth among countries and territories with the highest number of students in the country. In 2015, Vietnam stood 9th on the list.

The rate of Vietnamese students who studied at US universities was 67.2% in the school year of 2015-2016, while 15.1% followed masters courses and 7.8% attended other courses.

Vietnamese students also choose to study in other countries such as the UK, France, Canada, Holland, Australia, Japan and South Korea.
