Tien is the first Vietnamese student who has received the scholarship worth US$117,000.

The World Deaf Leadership (WDL) Scholarship is funded by the Nippon Foundation, Japan, for deaf students from developing nations to study at Gallaudet University.

Scholarship winners are those who must show the ability to receive and spread messages and life skills to deaf community.

Jame Clady Woodward, Director of a project for deaf people in Vietnam, said the scholarship winners will study basic skills in the US to become leaders, helping change the public’s attitude towards deaf people.

Since 1993, 180 deaf students from 50 countries in the world have received the scholarship.

Kathleen Peoples, an official from the US Consulate General in HCM City, said Gallaudet scholarships will help Vietnamese people of hearing impairment have the chance to access sign language.
