Seven best short films from YxineFF will be screened on August 10 at a German culture festival in Berlin.
The films are: Nautical Mile 2011 (Tran Thanh Hien Pham Thu Hang); Uncle and Son (Nguyen Dinh Anh); Monday, Wednesday, Friday (Nguyen Hoang Diep); At the Water’s Edge (Do Van Hoang); Go Play with Ice (Tran Ngoc Sang); The Lake (Dao Duc Hai); and Two Girls Against the Rain (Sao Sopheak).
The films from the portfolio of the Vietnamese Online Film Festival have been made over the last three years. They cover a wide range of topics, ranging climate change and its dramatic consequences, to the passions that flow beneath the surface of seemingly undramatic daily life, to the structures of social prejudice.
The six-minute Nautical Mile 2011, for instance, has picturesque, yet odd images resulting from the terrifying impact of global climate change on a fishing village in the Red River delta. Uncle and Son portrays the relationship between a boy who is on way to accept his uncle in place of his father. However, the boy is unable to ignore village gossip about his uncle, and his search for the truth behind the rumors results in entanglements that are far more tragic.
The only Cambodian filmmaker in the fray, Sao Sopheak presents a documentary about two women looking back at their struggle for recognition of their love against the backdrop of a Cambodian society that is slowly opening up.
All films, to be screened on the roof terrace of the House of World Cultures, or indoor if it rains, are subtitled in English.
The films are being screened at Wassermusik 2013, a month long open-air summer festival of music and films that opened on July 18.
YxineFF (Yxine Film Fest) is an online international short film festival established in Vietnam in 2010 that has become an important playground for Vietnam’s young filmmakers and cinema lovers.
