Iwasaki Chihiro’s painting “Sunflower and Baby” (1971)
The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam is hosting an exhibition of paintings by Iwasaki Chihiro in Hanoi until October 27.
The exhibition comes in cooperation with the Japan-based Chihiro Art Museum.
Entitled “Iwasaki Chihiro and Vietnam”, the exhibition presents 40 selected artworks (32 of which are appearing in Vietnam for the first time) that feature three main images: children, flowers and picture books.
According to the Japan Foundation in Vietnam, Iwasaki Chihiro (1918 – 1974) is one of the most beloved Japanese artists/illustrators in the world, celebrated for her unique watercolor paintings of flowers and children. Her main themes could be described as happiness and peace.
The artist was in all her life anxious about children’s happiness and peace. Throughout her career, Chihiro produced about 40 picture books including fairy tales, stories of the daily lives of children and babies, and especially “Children in the Flames of War”, published in 1973 with its inspiration drawn from the Vietnam War.
The book is one of the painter’s most important works in which she not only drew the illustrations but also wrote the text in spite of her debilitating liver cancer at the time.
The exhibition is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
