Conductors James Judd and Richard Pontzious will lead the Asian Youth Orchestra performing famous classical pieces in evening concerts at the Hanoi Opera House on August 10 and 11 respectively.
The program for the two concerts includes Weber’s Overture to Der Freischütz, Dvorak’s Cello Concerto in B minor, Sibelius’ Second Symphony, Brahms’ Third Symphony, Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C and Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.
Since its inaugural concerts in 1990, the Asian Youth Orchestra has played 291 concerts in Asia, Europe, the US and Australia to a combined audience exceeding one million. Millions more around the world have seen and heard the orchestra on CNN, CNBC Asia, NHK Television, Radio and Television Hong Kong, and Star TV.
A staggering 20,000 musicians, ranging in age from 17 to 27, have auditioned for the orchestra. Those selected for the full scholarship program study with an exceptional artist-faculty of principal players from the Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, National, San Francisco and Pittsburgh symphony orchestras, Brussels’ Monnaie Opera, the Triple Helix Trio, and the Boston Conservatory and Peabody conservatories.
James Judd, 64, of Britain is a graduate of Trinity College of Music, London. Judd was an assistant conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra, and served as associate music director of the European Union Youth Orchestra. He currently serves as the Artistic Director of Miami Music Project, a non-profit organization which provides music education to children.
American Richard Pontzious founded the Hong Kong-based Asian Youth Orchestra in 1987 with the distinguished violinist, conductor and humanitarian Yehudi Menuhin. A student of American composer Lou Harrison and conductors Sergiu Comissiona, Ferdinand Leitner and Josef Krips, Mr. Pontzious was awarded Hong Kong’s Bronze Bauhinia Star in 2000 for his contribution to music and the arts.
