The new species is named waza wa-za Gracixalus Nguyen, Le, Pham, Nguyen, Bonkowski Ziegler, 2012, after the name of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) in recognition of the organization’s contribution to the conservation of wild animals in general and frogs in particular.

The specimens of the new frog species were collected in the limestone area in eastern Cao Bang Province, at the 400-650m altitude compared to sea level. It is special that this species do not live along streams but in limestone valleys or at the gates of caves, far from water sources.

The discovery was published on the journal Organisms Diversity Evolution of Germany.

Chinese scientists have also announced a new species of shrub frog named Gracixalus nonggangensis Mo, Zhang, Luo, Zhou Chen, 2013.

Notably, the specimens of this new species were collected in Guangxi province, not far from the area where the new shrub frog species of Vietnam was found.
