Professional work places encourage employees.

A 26 year old graduate said he returned from Australia six months ago with an MBA from Western Sydney University. He submitted his CVs to major companies such as PG and Hoang Anh Gia Lai Corporation but has never made the interview round.

“Many of my classmates are also in the same situation.” he said. “The expected salary is VND15-20 million per month (USD720-958) as a marketer, which although higher than normal, when compared to my four years overseas, I think is reasonable.”

Phan Tien Hung, a local in HCM City said after graduating from HCM City Foreign Trade University, he continued to study at another school in the UK and got accepted into a major domestic bank as a minor manager. However, he decided to quit. “I had to face the jealousy of my co-workers so my plans and projects were always behind schedule and ineffective,” Hung said.

Nguyen Minh Hoang, head of the human resource department of Hoa Sen Corporation said among 80 students who studied overseas and applied, they eliminated 15 because the graduates requested salaries beyond the corporation’s wage cap. “But the deciding factor was their lack of experience.” Hoang added they accepted 15 graduates who agreed to the company’s normal salaries to gain experience.

Tran Huu Duc, CEO of BCC – Human Capital Solutions Corporation said, “Students mostly didn’t research about the domestic companies or their management so they didn’t have the chance to practice what they studied overseas.”

However the head of Dong A Bank’s strategy department said the lack of professional management in Vietnamese companies has caused the problem. “Many graduates decided to join foreign companies in Vietnam because of the poor work environment in Vietnamese companies.” he said.
