VietNamNet Bridge – The candidates with foreign university degrees believe that they are superior to those who finish domestic schools. Therefore, they tend to demand high salaries.
NHN, 26, was one of the candidates who was present at the Hoa Sen Group’s office to submit his curriculum vitae to apply for a job here. N said he returned from Australia six months ago, but he still could not find a decent job, though he has the master degree of the Western Sydney School.
N left Vietnam for Australia right after he finished high school and stayed there until he got the master degree, which he believed would open all the doors to the big businesses for him.
N once applied to PG, Hoang Anh Gia Lai Groups, but he was never shortlisted and did not come to the interview round. N said a lot of his friends faced the same problem.
N’s curriculum vitae showed his good learning background and skills. The only problem in it was that he expected the high salary of between VND15 and 20 million a month for the job of marketing officer.
When asked about the expected salary, N said the demand is reasonable for the knowledge and experiences he has got after many years of studying in Australia.
Phan Tien Hung, 29, who graduated the HCM City University of Foreign Trade, luckily found a job right after he came back to Vietnam from the UK, where he obtained the master degree.
Hung felt satisfied when he was recruited by a big domestic bank and worked as a division manager. However, he later became unhappy with the job, because he had to work in the non-cooperative atmosphere created by the colleagues, who were older than him but they were his juniors.
“As a result, the plans I ran always went slowly and ineffectively,” he said.
Nguyen Minh Hoang, Human Resource Director of the Hoa Sen Group, said 80 foreign university graduates sought the jobs in the latest recruitment campaign. Of these, 15 candidates were not shortlisted, mostly because they demanded the overly high salaries.
“They have the degrees from prestigious schools, but they don’t have experience and they still cannot show their abilities, but they are too demanding,” Hoang explained.
Tran Huu Duc, Director of BBC, a human resource consultancy firm, said many businesses once laid the red carpet to foreign university graduates, but they felt disappointed with the results of the graduates’ works.
“They did not have good knowledge about the Vietnamese business climate and the domestic corporate governance. Therefore, they could not use the knowledge they learned overseas in the Vietnamese environment,” Duc said.
Meanwhile, Ngo Bao Trung, a senior executive of Dong A Bank, thinks that the inexperienced management mechanism being applied by Vietnamese businesses is the main reason that makes the highly qualified workers inadaptable. In other words, the high qualification of the foreign university graduates does not fit the current management mechanism.
This explains why most of the people finishing foreign universities want to apply for the jobs at multi-national groups instead of domestic businesses.
Hoang from Hoa Sen Group said he has employed 15 workers who finished foreign schools. They have been working as normal employees and receive the same salaries as the ones finishing domestic schools.
