VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnam on September 23 was elected President of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the period of 2013-2014.

According to a statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 35 state members unanimously selected Vietnam as the President of the council in the first meeting at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Austria.

During the meeting, Ambassador of Vietnam – Mr. Nguyen Thiep who is now President of the Board of Governors thanked the trust and support of the IAEA member states for Vietnam.

The first time assuming the Chairmanship of the IAEA Board of Governors marks Vietnam’s growth at the IAEA and multilateral for a. It is also a new step to implement the policy of international integration of Vietnam, Thiep said.

On September 19, at the 57th General Assembly Session of IAEA, member states also unanimously elected Vietnam and 10 other countries as members of the IAEA Board of Governors for the period 2013-2015.

IAEA is an international inter-government organization established in 1957 and plays a central role in international cooperation to promote the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, to improve people’s lives, to ensure energy security, food security and environmental protection.

The IAEA Board of Governors, including many countries with advanced nuclear technology, is the policy-making body of IAEA through regular meetings during the year and reviews the activities of the IAEA under the direction of the IAEA Director General.

Vietnam joined IAEA in 1978 and it has been three times elected as a member of the Board of Governors in the 1991-1993, 1997-1999 and 2003-2005 terms.
