EXHIBITION

Exhibition “Gang of Five, Chancing Modern”

Vietnam Film Studio

No. 4 Thuy Khue Street, Hanoi

The Gang of Five, members Hong Viet Dung, Ha Tri Hieu, Dang Xuan Hoa, Tran Luong and Pham Quang Vinh hold an esteemed position in the history of fine art in Vietnam’s post-Doi Moi (Reform) era. They emerged in the early 80’s as Vietnam was struggling to rebuild after decades of war. Five male artists bound by friendship and a passion to express themselves freely without constraint, with a hope for the future that in the past was inconceivable, they pursued their dreams and consequentially inspired others to follow.

The exhibition site takes place at the Vietnam Film Studio where the new works of the artists will be presented along with a collection of archival materials highlighting a journey that traces their aesthetic development; the unique separate-togetherness that sustained the Gang of Five; the social environment that might have contributed to their acclaim while at the same time concealed their practices from thorough art historical discourse.

Exhibition “West Lake” by Anna-Maria Ory

Dong Phong Art Gallery

03 Ly Dao Thanh Street

Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi

The title of the exhibition is “West Lake”, as several paintings were painted on the west coast of the lake.

The subject and technique of the pictures mix the elements of both Eastern and Western traditions, in an attempt to establish connections between two very different cultures which nevertheless have a lot in common.

Art Exhibition “Le Sourire de la Mutation”

Institut Français de Hanoi – L’Espace

24 Trang Tien, Hanoi

Art exhibition “La sourire de la mutation” (translation: The smile of mutation) presents a poetic perspective of Vietnam in its metamorphosis. The three artists, coming from three different countries – France, Belgium and Vietnam – explore the theme of the changes in urban space through different perspectives: visual, dance and installation art.

The scenery of Vietnam’s metropolitan cities is illustrated in Truong Minh Thy Nguyen’s mural. The sun jacket covered ladies on motorbikes become the muses for Emmanuelle Vincent’s dance piece. And objects dangle between fantasy and tradition in the installation artwork of Pierre Larauza.

This exhibition is part of the Dance Festival “Europe Meets Asia in Contemporary Dance” 2017.

Exhibition “Abandoned by Heaven” by Bui Thanh Tam

Craig Thomas Gallery

27(i) Tran Nhat Duat, Tan Dinh Ward, District 1

You are invited to “Abandoned by Heaven”, a solo exhibition of oil and Đông Hồ folk paintings on canvas by Hanoi-based artist Bùi Thanh Tâm.

At first glance, the paintings of Bùi Thanh Tâm’s “Abandoned by Heaven” collection project an air of innocence and a pollyanish sense of contentment. The doe-eyed figures in the paintings look to be in the midst of living happy and prosperous lives, but there is something amiss lying just underneath the surface of the paintings.

This exhibition seeks to highlight the role and contribution of artist friendships in furthering the development of experimental languages in Vietnam, since 1975. As an educational display, it gives recognition to how ‘friendship’ continues to further the testing and encouraging of ideas among artists, beyond what was officially understood, taught, or predominantly exhibited in Vietnam at that time, believing their art worthy of more than catering to ideological/formal and touristic (commercial) demand.

Tickets: VND 35,000 (adults) – VND 25,000 (students)
