Sam Rainsy, the president of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue
Party (CNRP), has called on his supporters to set up camps for three
days and nights in the capital for a huge demonstration against the
results of the July 28 parliamentary election.
Under the official result announced by the country’s National Election
Committee (NEC) on September 8, the ruling Cambodian People’s Party
(CPP) now holds 68 seats in the parliament while the CNRP takes the
remaining 55.
Talking to the press on
September 8, Rainsy said that the results do not reflect the aspirations
of voters and claimed that there were many irregularities in the
polling process.
He declared that the CNRP was
calling a massive nonviolent demonstration for three consecutive days on
September 15, 16, 17 at the Freedom Park in Phnom Penh .
CNRP vice president Kem Sokha stated that the party will also boycott
the first session of the National Assembly if the problem is not
resolved.
Preliminary results announced by the NEC
on August 12 showed that the CPP won over 3.2 million votes and the
opposition, 2.9 million.
Meanwhile, the CPP
issued a press release stressing that the election took place in a
peaceful, free and fair manner, while appealed to the people to continue
to unite under the leadership of the King and back the new government
in developing the country.
CPP also called on the CNRP to join the new National Assembly in the interest of the national and the people.-VNA
