HA NOI (VNS) — The three State-owned giants in the energy sector inked a strategic cooperation agreement on Tuesday with the aim of ensuring national energy security.

Under the agreement, Electricity of Viet Nam (EVN), the National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) and the Viet Nam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) will come up with a master plan for the sector and build joint power plants, in addition to co-operating to exploit and transport coal both at home and abroad.

President of the Viet Nam Energy Association Tran Viet Ngai said that past cooperation between the three groups has helped ensure national energy security.

However, Ngai pointed out, there is still not a master plan for the energy sector as a whole; rather, the coal, power and oil industries each have their own plans for development, hindering the implementation of projects included in the national power development plan.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, PetroVietnam President Phung Dinh Thuc asked EVN to step up cooperation when it came to operating PetroVietnam’s gas-fuelled power plants, especially during the rainy season. He also asked the company to speed up the negotiation and signing of contracts with these power plants – particularly Nhon Trach 1 and 2, Vung Ang Coal Plant, Dakring Hydroelectric Plant and Phu Quy Wind Power Plant – as well as the construction of the 220 kV Duyen Ha-Doc Soi power line connecting Dakring Hydroelectricity Plant to the national power grid.

Thuc also suggested TKV’s leaders accelerate the negotiation of coal selling contracts with PetroVietnam’s thermal power plant. — VNS
