Investors are pouring money into education

Hung Hau Investment JSC, after spending VND75 billion to buy Van Hien University (4-year training), bought Van Xuan Junior Colleges (3-year training), Van Hanh, Van Tuong and Au Lac Intermediate school (2-year training) to set up an education chain.

Students at Van Hien University can spend their internship at Hung Hau Company and the school invites directors of large companies to work as visiting lecturers.

Prior to that, a group of investors from TNK Capital, EQuest and Ismart Education took over VATC (Vietnamese American English Center) and APC (American Polytechnic College) in an ambitious plan to apply digital lecture technology and smart class model, creating interactive learning environment with lectures designed in 2D and 3D graphics.

In early February 2017, TH Group established TH School system, the first school in Vietnam that applied a comprehensive education model according to an advanced international curriculum in combination with Vietnamese education curriculum.

In the past, investments worth tens of billions of dong in the education sector would be considered big affairs. Today, the investment capital is up to trillions of dong.

Considered an ‘emerging influence’ after buying Hong Bang, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Universities and SNA (International Schools of North America), Nguyen Hoang Group is implementing an ambitious plan of providing package training from preschool to university and post university.

After taking over Thanh Tay University and contributing capital to IAE (Institute of American Education), Dr Dam Quang Minh, president of Thanh Tay University, said 20-30 percent of the school’s lecturers are businesspeople.

Analysts said that investors tend to focus on upgrading training quality, opening new training majors and setting up closed education systems.

They explained that if building closed education systems from preschool to university, investors will have stable clients for 12-16 years.

Upgrading the training quality is a must. If the products don’t have high quality, schools will be less competitive and find it hard to enroll students.

Tran Phi Yen, managing director of IvyPrep, also said that in the context of massive development of foreign language centers, training and operation models of ten years ago will lead to failure.

IvyPrep Education trains academic English to prepare students studying overseas with scholarships.

Analysts noted that joint training is a growing tendency in the education sector. Van Hien University now has 40 training majors, or three times more than previously, before it was taken over by Hung Hau. Hutech provides 40 master’s and PhD training majors in cooperation with schools from the US, France and Malaysia.
