Lao government officials and foreign diplomats on August 2 joined the
locals in Vientiane in a walk to mark the 47 th founding
anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The event, held by the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was also to
celebrate 17 years of the Laos ’s membership to the bloc.
Since it joined the group in 1997, Laos has taken an active part
in ASEAN-related events, including conferences on anti-drug crime and
corruption, transport, forestry, and tourism.
Additionally, the country has encouraged young people to study the
association and actively prepare for the 35 th General Assembly of the
ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly and ASEAN Chair 2016.
It strives to act as an active member for the happiness of the ASEAN
people as well as peace, stability and development in the region and the
