Cambodia’s National Election Committee (NEC) has officially announced
the votes of its fifth general election held on July 28.
Accordingly, as many as 6,616,110 people nationwide cast their votes,
accounting for 68.38 percent of the voters numbering 9,675,453.
Initial official results show that the ruling Cambodian People’s Party
(CPP) got 3,227,729 votes, while the main opposition Cambodia National
Rescue Party (CNRP) gained 2,941,133votes.
Other minor parties occupied the remaining votes.
The official seats at the fifth National Assembly will be identified
basing on the final results which will be announced after all the
complaints about the poll results are settled.
Earlier, sources in Cambodia said that the CPP won the majority of
68 parliamentary seats while the CNRP got the remaining 55 seats.
CNRP, however, rejected the results and called for
the NEC to establish a joint committee to investigate irregularities
during the poll. It has also threatened to stage demonstrations
nationwide on August 4.-VNA
