Italian Disco with Rodion

Sat 14 Sep 2013, 9 pm

Q4 / Cargo Bar

7 Nguyen Tat Thanh, D.4, HCMC

Rodion once rocked the Hanoi’s American Club and he now returns to Ho Chi Minh City for another unforgettable night.

Let’s get ready to dance people! The first time RODION came to Saigon, I danced for 4 hours straight and had to go home to ice my knees because I danced so much they burned!

RODION is from Rome. He makes freaked out Italo Disco that’s ahead of its time. It’s somewhere between the depths of Nordic cosmic music and the French synthesizer funk, mixed with the dramatic melodies of Italian horror movies. Heavily influenced by soundtrack composers like Morricone, the Japanese science fiction animation soundtracks of the 70’s and by classical music Rodion is fully tuned into the extraterrestrial beat.

Mixmag/UK called him the “new genius of Italian Dance music”. Disco legend GIORGIO MORODER played a Rodion remix of his E=MC2 megahit during his first-ever DJ appearance in New York, at the age of 73.

This is going to be one full fledged out of this world dancing experience that you don’t want to miss! HIBIYA LINE and SUPERKID will be warming up the crowd and CRAZY MONKEY will be providing tricked out live visuals. We’re also re-designing the Cargo space to give it the most optimal sound for this outstanding night.

Tickets: 100,000 VND at door.

Listen to Rodion’s “ALAGOAS COWBOYS”:

Screening of “The Great Gatsby”

Sat 14 Sep 2013, 2 pm

TPD

51 Tran Hung Dao Str (4th floor), Hanoi

On Saturday September 14th 2013, TPD Centre will host another session of From book to screen programme. We will screen The Great Gatsby and have discussion with 2 guests after the screening.

About the book

The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald that follows a cast of characters living in the fictional town of West Egg on prosperous Long Island in the summer of 1922. The story primarily concerns the young and mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his quixotic passion for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan. Considered to be Fitzgerald’s magnum opus, The Great Gatsby explores themes of decadence, idealism, resistance to change, social upheaval, and excess, creating a portrait of the Jazz Age that has been described as a cautionary tale regarding the American Dream.

About the film

The Great Gatsby is a 2013 American 3D drama film. An adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel of the same name, the film was co-written and directed by Baz Luhrmann, and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton and Elizabeth Debicki. It follows the life and times of millionaire Jay Gatsby and his neighbor Nick, who recounts his encounter with Gatsby at the height of the Roaring Twenties.

The screening is for educational purpose, entrance is free, though guests are welcome to donate to TPD Centre’s Young Cinema Fund.

The Centre for Assistance and Development of Movie Talents was established with the purposes of designing and implementing programs to assist and develop movie talents and other activities for the development of Vietnamese cinema.

Exhibition “A New Me”

13 – 22 Sep 2013, 8 am – 10 pm

Ly Thai To Park

Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi

“A New Me” is how I view my life, and hope you would understand the beauty of life in diversity.

The exhibition is the outcome of 15 disadvantaged groups in society, after four months of hard work, with the support of various civil society organizations, to bring the public all the dearest, most honest, and thus, most beautiful images of the life of ME, engraved with sincere aspirations, buried thoughts, and even positive changes with the support of social organizations.

She is HIV positive…..

He is blind…..

He is a transgender…..

There have been countless of times when such indicated words and looks pointing toward the direction of Me. Making me distressed and troubled. I have asked myself many times, what kind of thoughts people often have of me? Perhaps, through the eyes of judgment and discrimination, everyone only sees a drug-addict, disabled, poor, crooked Me. These prejudices do not stop me from living strongly and rising above to control my own life.

A New Me is something so ordinary in my life, happiness, sadness, changes and achievements. Difficulties and overcoming difficulties, reflections of people who are just like me, or not like me, but we all want to share and give a hand for a better life.

In this modern and refreshing open space, different topic groups for images are also different aspects of ME.

1. I Believe

Negative stereotypes towards people with HIV, disabilities or drug addiction still cannot stop ME from rising above to live well and beneficially for my family and society.

2. I Love

I sympathize, share and support in a world so difficult and challenging yet so full of love.

3. I Share

One person for everyone, everyone for one person. I and my community gain self control, together we improve our material and spiritual lives.

4. I Learn

The skill classes offered by various civil society organizations help me gain more knowledge to improve my material and spiritual lives.

5. I am Me

The greatest desire of mankind is to truly live as oneself. Despite facing multiple discriminations, I still live and love. I want to be alive and to be respected as myself.

6. I Thrive

Each day, I try to improve the material life for me and my family. All the changes, even small, are still the first sturdy bricks for my own independent life.

7. I Dare

I am no longer shy to talk about sexual health, or to share houseshold chores. This has helped me gain more knowledge and becomes healthier.

8. I Can

Nothing is impossible. People often think that I am blind and thus, cannot take photographs. But the « impossible » has become « possible » when you take a look at all the photographs that I took, the images that could make you surprised and delighted with new self discovery about what is impossible – possible.

Exhibition “Frozen Dreams”

Opening: Fri 13 Sep, 6.30 pm

Exhibition: 13 – 23 Sep 2013

Manzi Art Space

14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi

A reminder of the past;

A replacement of what once was;

A longing for the impossible.

Manzi art space is proud to present the ‘Frozen Dreams’ by Hanoi based visual artist Vương Thạo, who was selected as one of the South East Asia region’s top ten artists by the Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation Signature Art Prize – the most prestigious art award in the region.

Known for his “fossilized” replicas of Hanoi’s old quarter, village gates and bridges, this time, at manzi, Thạo will present a very interesting divergence in his “living fossil” concept and a series of paintings on dó paper “Bodies and Dreams” which have been highly appreciated by local and international collectors.

The ‘Frozen Dreams’ is expected to be a delightful mini show for art lovers of Hanoi this autumn.

About artist Vương Thạo

Born in 1969 in Hanoi, Vietnam.

After graduating from Hanoi University of Fine Arts in 1995, Thao has been working as a freelance artist especially on paintings and installation. His paintings are on traditional material (“do” paper), but he is better known for his installation of living fossils. Thao’s artwork has been exhibited in many places and countries.

Thao has recently been working on a new concept and form of living fossils.

For more information, please contact: manzihanoi@gmail.com, Tel:+84 (04) 3716 3397

manzi’s art programme is supported by Hanoi Grapevine- our communications partner.

Art Exhibition of Lolo Zazar

Opening: Thu 12 Sep, 06.30 – 8 pm

Exhibition: 12 Sep – 12 Oct 2013

88 Lounge

88 Xuan Dieu Str, Tay Ho Dist, Hanoi

Come to an art exhibition of Lolo Zazar, a famous French artist working on many different supports, will carry you away to 3 different worlds.

Each floor will hold a variant atmosphere, with a different collection of artwork:

Mezzanine Floor – “When Metal Dreams”

A fusion between stainless steel, elements and light: the stainless steel withstands the work of time while reflecting the materials and light, introducing us into a new world.

3rd Floor – “Rencontres”

This collection is a mixture of stainless steel sculpture and traditional Vietnamese lacquer. Once again Lolo Zazar leads us into an unexpected fusion, an unusual meeting of these two materials.

4th Floor – “B-Tong”

KH CAT B TONG means drill and cut concrete. These telephone numbers are small companies that offer their demolition and construction services. Those thousands of graffiti color and line the walls of Vietnam. A part of Hanoi history is engraved on these walls. The traces on the walls are magical prints, footprints of men and women, nature and its elements: wind, fire, water, sun.

Read KVT’s review about Lolo’s exhibition “Voice of the Wall” with his “Khoan cat be tong” paintings last year at L’Espace; and Ilza Burchett’s review of Lolo’s exhibition “Unidentified Light Objects” earlier this year.

Lolo also participated in one event in our Grapevine Arts Forum series talking about films and animation.

Vietnamese Artists in New York – Exhibition “Worlds of Paper and Wood”

Exhibition: 05 – 12 Sep 2013

Emmanuel Fremin Gallery

547 West 27 Street, suite 510, New York

“Worlds of Paper and Wood”, a NYC Preview of Asian Art London, features a group show exhibition of contemporary Vietnamese fine art curated by Raquelle Azran. The exhibition will display the works of Dinh Thi Tham Poong, Vu Thu Hien, Phung Pham, Trinh Tuan, Dinh Hanh and Francoise Ben Arous.

Never confrontational or aggressive, Vietnamese art is a lyrical, serene and intriguing moment of beauty in time. The juxtaposition of handmade rice paper and traditional lacquer painting with contemporary artistic techniques bridges the temporal worlds of past and present and spans the cultural divide of East and West. The paper is hand-crafted in traditional craft villages, using a centuries-old technique. The lacquer is distilled from the sap of an indigenous Asian tree, and layered and polished to produce shimmering effects of shade and colour.

Japanese Film Weekend Autumn 2013

13 – 15 Sep 2013

National Cinema Center

87 Lang Ha Str, Hanoi

In celebration of the Japan – Vietnam Friendship Year 2013, the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly presents a Japanese Film Weekend Autumn 2013 from Friday 13 to Sunday 15 September 2013 in Hanoi.

Two years and half have passed since the 3.11 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami occurred in Japan. Tremendous efforts for recovery have been implemented since then but the scars are still visible in many places in the region. Moreover to our sorrow, our collective memory on the disaster has been gradually faded month by month.

With the aim of preventing this disaster from being forgotten, we offer special weekend film screenings which are all related to the natural disasters occurred in Japan, including two excellent documentaries on the 3.11 disaster.

The Film Weekend opens with the newest documentary film, “The Radio of Hope” (2012) which depicts the struggling life of town residents who are also the 3.11 disaster victims but run an emergency radio station wishing to bring smiles to as many disaster victims as possible through the radio. This documentary has successfully brought hope and courage to the audience and has been a long-run hit in Japan since its premier screening in April 2012.

“LIGHT UP NIPPON” (2012) is another documentary film related to the 3.11 disaster, introducing young people’s challenge to energize the devastated areas in Tohoku region through fireworks, a Japanese traditional art form with a long history. The efforts of enthusiastic young volunteers inspire us hope for future as well as remembrance of the 3.11 disaster.

“Eclair” (2011) is, on the other hand, a feature film about an orphan boy who vigorously survives in the era of World War II, gaining the power to live by thinking about sweets and singing a song. This film was taken in 2010 in several locations in Miyagi Prefecture, where the 3.11 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami stroke one year later. Most of the locations are disastrously wiped by the tsunami and a lot of volunteers and cooperators of this film have become the victims of the disaster. With this fact, the main character Akio’s sorrow and hope overlap with mourning for the lost nature and the deceased, as well as hope for recovery at this juncture.

Last but not least, “WANKO” is also a feature film which depicts a life of one family and a dog who are living in Miyakejima, a small island where an active volcano exists. Based on a true story, this film induces the audience to burst into tears for the family and the dog.

We hope that the audience will keep the memory of the 3.11 disaster and think over what is important in our life through these films. All films will be screened with Vietnamese and English sub-titles. Free admission tickets are available at the Japan Foundation (27 Quang Trung, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi).

Program of FVH in Sep

We hope you’ve had a wonderful, restful, fun summer! According to the Vietnamese lunar calendar, fall officially began on the 7th of August – did you miss it? And, on the 19th, fall will be 1/2 over!

We have a nice program to start our new season:

We’ll start off with a tour of the Museum of History on the 7th. Very popular, this tour will help you understand not only the objects within the museum, but also give you an overview of 3 thousand years of modern Vietnamese history.

Next, on the 16th our Japanese guides will take you to Van Mieu, the Temple of Literature, to learn more than just the meaning of the gates: also Confucianism and the Royal Examination System, both of which still deeply influence life in Vietnam.

The famous Vietnamese modern lacquer artist, Thanh Chuong, has been collecting Vietnamiana all his life. On the 21st, we visit his estate filled with his collection of the smallest objects such as toothpick holders to the largest such as houses and temples.

Our Music and Performing Arts Section is well and running under the leadership of Helen! Ca Tru “started off as a form of entertainment for the royal court, later branching out into being performed at small inns for scholars and other members of the elite.” On the 25th, let’s get to understand this very traditional form of music.

Volunteer: this is the key word and the key to the success of Friends of Vietnam Heritage. For nearly 15 years, volunteers from all over the world have given you the chance to understand Vietnamese culture and history deeply – not the travel agency tour guide way.

Volunteer: We need you. You do not need to be an expert in any field. You need not speak Vietnamese. You do not have to have been here longer than a few weeks.

We need you to volunteer for between 5 and 10 hours per month to help us present one program per month. A list of currently open volunteer positions is toward the end of the program. Please, consider helping us help to preserve Vietnamese culture and help broaden understanding of it.

For details please download this file: September 2013 Program.

Hue – Visual Art Project “Perspective”

Opening: Fri 06 Sep

Exhibition: 12 – 17 Sep 2013

New Space Arts Foundation

2nd Floor, Number 15 Le Loi, Hue City

Perspective is a continuous project following the projects about New media that NSAF have conducted in the last couple of years. Within this project (Perspective) we will organize conferences, workshops, and display and exhibit the best video artworks by Vietnamese artists.

Perspective project is the place where artists, especially those from Ha Noi, Hue and Ho Chi Minh city come into contact. This is an opportunity for young artists to work together and directly discuss with curators.

Since 2000, Hue has been one of the cities that are home to young artists who seek for creativeness in contemporary art. Thanks to that, audience and students in Hue have the opportunity to get to know about contemporary art. Also since 2000, Hue has been holding Festivals once every two years that showcase various unique art forms, including contemporary art. It’s a new wind for artists and audience.

NSAF and Hue university of Fine Arts have joint hands to organize conferences, workshops, and exhibitions about video art on a regular basis. Through these activities, a group of independent artists who work in this art field has formed.

Based on the concept of Perspective, NSAF curate and organize this exhibition project: Perspective to introduce video artworks by artists from Ha Noi – HCM, and artists from central Viet Nam who live in Hue. These artists are selected from many of those who are working independently and openly… with various visual art forms, especially video arts… They integrate into contemporary art tendencies by exploring new materials, ideas, ways of presenting… Each artist is a strong personality, with a unique style proven by time… in the course of their lives and creativity.

Perspective aims to bring artists who are working independently and silently to the audience. Besides, the exhibition will not only introduce new artworks but also create interactions between artworks in the same space; and between artists to create a new source of energy for creativity.

Stages of the project

Perspective has two stages in a period of 5 months.

Stage 1: Since this is an open project we will spend time to discuss and work with curators and artists from Ho Chi Minh city, Ha Noi, and artists who are currently residing and working in Hue.

Stage 2: The project becomes a social activity with the support of many people and organizations:

● Create and make video artworks at NSAF

● Organize conferences for curators, artists and audiences

● Exhibit artworks at NSAF

The project opens in September, 2013

● Opening: Sep 6th, 2013

● Exhibition: from Sep 12th, 2013 till Sep 17th, 2013

The Goethe-Institut shows a special selection of the hottest new German films in Hanoi, Hai Phong, Hue, Da Nang, Nha Trang, HCMC and for the first time also in Thai Nguyen.

As every year, the German Film Festival would like to give Vietnamese audiences the opportunity to get to know current German films and discovernew perspectives on Germany via the silver screen. Therefore we presentin more than 50 screenings,in original German language withVietnamese and English subtitles or voice-over, selected films which have been particularly successful in cinemas around the world as well as at the Berlin Film Festival and other festivals (All prizes and awards can be found in our brochure and on the website).

In 2013 German films approached historical and contemporary debates about home and identity, love, death, friendship and responsibility. This year’s German Film Festival in Vietnam offers the audience a selection of 10 film highlights from renowned directors and with popular German actors.

Film schedule and places to pick up free tickets in all cities.

The Festival Films

• Opening with “Barbara” the Festival presents thestory of a woman torn between two countries, the German Democratic Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany andlikewise between two men. “Four days in May” looks at a different chapter of German history. Yearning for the approaching end of World War 2, a rare convergence between Russian soldiers and German civilians emerges when the Soviet Army occupies an orphanage. The documentary “Sound of Heimat – Germany sings!” provides an insight into the lively, inventive and creative traditional German music scene.

• The coexistence of different cultures is a topic addressed in the movie “Kaddish for a friend”. Set in Berlin, it portraits the development of an exceptional friendship between a Palestinian boy and a Jewish World War 2 Veteran.

• Of course comedy and love are part of the program: “Vincent wants to Sea” is a road movie, showing Vincent, who suffers from Tourette-Syndrome, Marie, who has an eating disorder and the extremely neurotic Alex on their adventurous escape from a nursing home.

• Drama is not missing either. “Stopped on track” deals with the process of dying in the familiar circle and alone, apart from hospitals and terminal care. In “Home for the weekend” the unexpected healing of Marko’s mother from a long mental illness turns out as a crucial test for the whole family. The post-apocalyptic thriller “Hell” gives an impression of a world where the sun has turned the earth into a lifeless wasteland where humans struggle to survive.

• Entertainment for the whole family is offered with “Victor and the secret of Crocodile Mansion”, a movie telling the story of Victor, trying to solve the puzzle around the death of his cousin Cäcilie. Being fed up with humans destroying their habitat, the animals in “Animals United – Adventure in Africa” hold a conference to finally stop man made climate change.

The German Film Festival 2013 promises a great selection of films with many exciting, touching and inspiring moments for cineastes and for the whole family.
