VietNamNet Bridge – Every August, the centuries-old fig trees on Ngoc Mountain, in Ngoc Xuyen ward of Do Son tow, Hai Phong city enter the ripening fruit season, casting a fragrant smell.
Last year a group of 17 ancient fig trees in Do Son was recognized as Vietnam Heritage Trees.
There are 17 fig trees aged between 120 and 1,000 years and hundreds of other trees under 100 years old.
To
pick up fig fruits from the ancient trees of 20-40 m high, people have
to use bamboo of up to 6-7 m. At the age of 83, Mrs. Nguyen Khac Tho
still picks fruit as gifts for guests.
The family of Mr. Le Hoang Vu, 38, owns three of the 17 fig trees that were recognized as heritage trees of Vietnam.
Vu’s father, Mr. Le Viet Hanh, 65 said the price for 1kg of figs is from VND10,000 to VND40,000 ($0.5-$2).
Many families do not pick the fruit so the ripening fruit falls around the tree and along the road to Ngoc Mountain.
Kids often go to Ngoc Mountain to pick up figs.
They choose whole figs to take home.
Mrs. Nguyen Thi Si, 85, said ripening figs saved local residents from starvation in 1945.
