Kim Phung wins U20 Asian chess champion the second time

Hoang Thanh Trang, 33, used to play for Vietnam but she is now in the national chess team of Hungary, the country where her family settles. She is the most successful female player of Vietnam to date. Trang currently ranks 27th in the FIDE world rankings of the top 100 female players. Trang’s Elo rating is 2476. She was the U20 world champion in 1998 and won the gold medal of the 2005 European Club tournament.

Pham Le Thao Nguyen, Elo 2421, now ranks 52nd in the world and is the leading female player of Vietnam. She won the individual bronze medal at the team chess world championship three years ago and helped the women’s chess team of Vietnam win the bronze medal of Group B. She was granted the title of International Grandmaster in 2010.

Hoang Thi Nhu Y, born in 1993, ranks 28th in the world youth rankings with Elo 2252. She won the Asian championship in 2010 and some SEA Games gold medals in 2011.

Nguyen Thi Mai Hung, born in 1994, currently ranks 26th in the world’s Top 100 young players, with Elo 2257. Hung’s highest position in the Top 100 world youth rankings is 18 in 2011.

Vo Thi Kim Phung (right), the new Asian U20 Champion, now ranks 60 in the world’s Top 100 youth rankings. In 2011, she won the first championship at the U20 Asia Champs, ending the 16-year period of waiting for this title of Vietnamese chess since 1998. Two years later, she won the double champions in this tournament for both blitz chess and traditional chess.
