Liem and Son win second round in chess competition

Both Le Quang Liem and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son won second round of the ongoing Asian Chess Championships in the Philippines on Sunday.

International Grand Master (IGM) Liem, seed No 1, beat his teammate Tran Tuan Minh in the first round and Batchuluun of Mongolia in the second round.

While IGM Son, seed No 5, defeated Roca Petronio of the hosts in the first round and his teammate Nguyen Van Huy in the second round.

In the next round, Liem will meet Gomez John Paul of the Philippines and Son plays with Al-Sayed Mohammed of Qatar.

In the women’s side, Pham Le Thao Nguyen beat two Chinese players in two rounds and she will meet another tough player of China, Huang Qian, in the third round.

Taekwondo Vietnam expected to get big rewards at Olympic

Vietnamese athletes will get US$100,000 if they win a gold medal at Olympic Rio 2016.

This was announced at the signing of a six-year contract between the Korean CJ group and Taekwondo Vietnam in May 20.

Chess competition, Taekwondo Vietnam, Hope Cup football tourney, amateur football tournament

During six years, CJ will finance all coaching and training costs for Vietnamese female Taekwondo to compete at four major tournaments: the Asian Games 2014 in Incheon, the Republic of Korea, the Youth Olympic Games 2014 in China, the Olympic 2016 in Brazil and the Asian Games in Vietnam in 2019.

CJ is committed to offering big rewards for athletes who win gold medals at importance events, for example US$100,000 at the Asian Games 2014 in Incheon and US$20,000 at the Asian Games in Vietnam in 2019.

In addition, CJ will choose Korean coaches for the Vietnamese team.

This is the second time CJ has sponsored Vietnamese Taekwondo athletes.

Kids of diverse backgrounds take part in Hope Cup football tourney

The 4th Hope Cup football tournament, The Roar of the Lions, will see 16 teams of young people from various backgrounds, including street children who live at open houses and warm shelters, as well as students from international schools in HCM City.

The event will be held on May 26 and June 2 at Ky Hoa Football Field in District 10.

The contest, which draws children from diverse backgrounds, gives them an opportunity to interact through the language of sport.

Tran Van Dat, who lives at a warm shelter in District 8, said: “We are happy we can play football with many friends. Our skills have improved and our spirit is higher, too. We hope to see strong teams again compete for the this year.”

The fourth annual tournament will mark a milestone for the children who have been taking part since the first event.

The Cup attracted sponsorship from the Consular Club of HCM City, California FitnessYoga Centre, Chance to Play from the UK, the British Council, RGF Executive Search and Aothun.vn.

All 11 football teams from warm shelters will be fully equipped with good uniforms, shoes and protective clothing.

Sai Gon Children’s Charity is the co-organiser of the event, which was also supported by the LIN Centre for Community Development.

FC Tecotec An Duong win amateur tournament

FC Tecotec An Duong defeated Top Group to take the Larue Cup, an amateur football tournament which concluded in Ha Noi-based Quan Ngua Sports Palace on Sunday.

In the third-place play-off match, Ha Thang FC beat HD Bank to get the bronze medal.

The winner received VND30 million (US$1,400) and a berth in Da Nang’s finals where they will meet with champions from 16 other cities and provinces for the super cup trophy and a bonus of VND100 million ($4,800).

The tournament attracted 200 amateur teams in Ha Noi but only 32 teams of five-a-side competed in final round.

It is the fifth year the tournament has been organised nationwide.
