More than 3,000 fishermen in the central coastal province of Quang Ngai
have been trained to become captains of fishing ships thanks to a
vocational training project for rural workers, known as Project 1965.

According to Le Van Son, head of the provincial
Department of Exploitation and Protection of Fisheries Resources, since
2005, the department, in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture
and Rural Development and schools, has opened tens of free courses to
train ship captains and chief mechanics.

Around
2,000 fishermen have been granted certificates recognising them as chief
mechanics, raising the rate of trained fishermen who operate offshore
fishing means in the province to over 80 percent.

In 2012, the project provided free training for 112 fishermen and the figure is expected to be 210 this year.

Between now and the year-end, the provincial Department of
Agricultural and Rural Development will create all conditions for the
remaining to attend these courses.

Project 1956 runs from 2010 to 2020 with total funding of 25.9 trillion VND (1.2 billion USD).

Last year, nearly 485,000 rural workers across the country benefited
from the project, according to statistics from the General Department of
Vocational Training.
This year, the project aims to train 600,000 workers, with 70-80 percent of them expected to find jobs after training.-VNA
