Investigators from HCM City Police have concluded that a short circuit in a motorbike parked inside the buiding caused the fatal fire at Carina Plaza four months ago.

In March, HCM City Police launched criminal proceedings into the incident that killed 13 people and injured 91 others.
The blaze started shortly after midnight in the basement located between buildings A and B of the apartment complex on March 23.
The city’s Fire Fighting Police Department sent 34 fire trucks and 200 firefighters to the site to extinguish the blaze and rescued hundreds of people who were trapped inside. The fire was brought under control after an hour.
At least 150 motorbikes and 13 cars parked in the basement were destroyed by the blaze.
In related news, the State Authority for Construction Quality Inspection (SACQI) under the Ministry of Construction has inspected repair work at the apartment building.
According to SACQI, the total area affected by the fire was 1,000sq.m, including 700sq.m in block A and the rest in block B. The upper floors of Block A and B and the entire block C were not affected and the buildings were structurally sound.
“In general, the damage caused by inferno was at a low level. Its life expectancy is not affected as it is still the same as the original design,” a representative from the authority told Báo Giao Thông (Transport) newspaper. — VNS
