VietNamNet Bridge – An infant and three teenagers have died and seven others are receiving medical treatment after eating corn cakes suspected of being mouldy in the northern mountain province of Ha Giang’s Quan Ba District.
Two of them died early this morning in the provincial General Hospital, four days after the two other victims – a 12-month-old baby and 9-year-old girl.
Doctors said all showed symptoms of disordered blood coagulation, kidney failure and elevated liver enzymes.
Three other victims, one in a coma with symptoms of elevated liver enzymes, are being treated at the provincial hospital. The four others are recovering in Quan Ba District hospital.
All 11 victims are from a Mong family in Lung Vai Hamlet in Can Ty Commune. They are reported to have eaten the cakes together on Monday.
According to local authorities, Mong people often keep corn flour for a long time to make floating cakes regardless advice to the contrary. The flour can become mouldy and covered with a poinsonous fungus.
