On April 8, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tho from Tu Liem district, Hanoi, detected two packs attached between two layers of a broken plate.
This plate is decorated with roses and in the back is the words “Made in China.” It only has a thin layer on top and the bottom is made by ceramic. The lower layer of this plate is made by opaque yellow plastic.

The two packs inside the plate are 1.5×2.5 cm in size, in white color and wrapped by tin. The black texts printed on the packs are faded. Until now, the substance in the two packs is still unknown. These plates are used popularly by many households in both countryside and cities in Vietnam.

At the end of March, some people in Tuy An District, Phu Yen Province detected Chinese sandals with unknown chemicals.

Ms. Tran Thi Bong, from Phu Long village, An My district, said that before the lunar New Year, some villagers bought Chinese sandals in the local market at the price of VND25,000 ($2.1)/pair. Some of them had itching and pain on their feet. They cut the sandals and found small holes containing a sticky substance and white powder with a bad smell.

The local authorities have taken some sandals for testing. The test result has not been made public yet.

Last November, a woman from Hoang Quoc Viet Street, Hanoi found strange object in her son’s T-shirt painted with the spider man. The strange object was covered by a plastic layer so when the T-shirt is washed, water cannot absorb into it. It looked like an electronic part in computers, radios or TVs. When it was touched, this device glowed.

In October and November 2012, the authorities of the central provinces of Phu Yen, Da Nang and Thua Thien-Hue found a lot of Chinese bras containing bags of a liquid substance and white tablets. The discovery made women very worried because these kinds of bras were very popular in Vietnam.

Tests showed that the liquid substance was mineral oil and the white tablets contained polystyrene, which can cause cancer for those who are exposed to it too much.

Are there any other Chinese products containing strange substances? That’s the question of consumers. However, to protect themselves, they are advised to use goods with clear origin.
