In the early morning of May 29, a serious landslide occurred at Xom Lo in Tan An Tay commune in Ngoc Hien district of the southernmost province of Ca Mau. Six houses tumbled into the Ong Dinh River, including a shrimp and a rice purchasing point, a hair salon and a grocery.

Mr. Duong Quoc Khai, Tan An Tay commune’s Chair said that when the landslide occurred, people were sleeping. They woke up because of the sound from cracked walls and the shaken ground. Everybody hastily ran out of the house.

“Two children of 6-7 years could not run in time. They were weighed down by a collapsed tree. However, they survived,” said Khai.

The same day the local rescuers finished salvaging of property of the six families. The total loss is estimated at VND600 million ($30,000). The local government has temporarily granted each household VND4 million ($200).

Fifteen other households in the area with high erosion risk in Xom Lo are urgently being relocated to safety places.
