Japanese to conduct Tchaikovsky

HA NOI (VNS)— The Viet Nam National Symphony Orchestra will play music by Tchaikovsky, with guest conductor Shinozaki Yasuo and pianist Tran Thi Tam Ngoc, at the Ha Noi Opera House tomorrow and Friday.

The concert will feature three works – Marche Slave, Piano Concerto No 1 and Symphony No 5 composed in the 19th century.

Yasuo completed his conducting studies at the Vienna Musikhochschule in 1998. He made his opera debut with Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro in Tokyo in 1993 and has subsequently conducted at several opera houses in Japan.

He is now one of the leading Japanese conductors of the younger generation. As assistant conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic during the 2003-04 season, Yasuo conducted a subscription programme in the Walt Disney Concert Hall, regional performances, concerts with the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group and education and community concerts.

He conducted in Germany with the Nuremberg Symphony and returned to Japan to lead performances of the Tokyo Philharmonic and the Osaka Symphony Orchestra.

He has performed in Viet Nam several times.

Ngoc will perform Piano Concerto No 1, considered the most successful piano concerto by Tchaikovsky.

Ngoc finished her Masters degree in piano performance at the Boston Conservatory on a full scholarship in 2009.

She is the winner of many international competitions, such as the Asian Chopin Piano Competition in Kuala Lumpur (2004) and the Boston Conservatory Piano solo and Chamber Music Honours Competition (2007-08-09).

She has performed in many public concerts and recitals in Viet Nam, Singapore and the US with international and Vietnamese conductors.

She is now a piano lecturer at the Viet Nam Academy of Music.

The concert will kick off at 8pm. Tickets are VND200,000 to 500,000 (students VND100,000) at No 1 Trang Tien Street. — VNS
