Scientists recorded dozens of flora and fauna species listed in the
World Red Book in the northern province of Thanh Hoa, including
Roosevelt’s Muntjac, monocled cobra and a species of conifer called
Yunnan Catkin Yew.
These species are amongst the 1,000 rare
animals and plants identified as part of the project “identifying and
listing the flora and fauna of Pu Luong, Pu Hu and Xuan Lien nature
reserves and Ben En National Park”.
Scientists recorded more
than 402 plant, 25 mammal, 56 bird, 14 reptile and 17 amphibian species
in Xuan Lien Nature Reserve. An additional 600 species were identified
in Ben En National Park and Pu Luong and Pu Hu nature reserves.
After two years of implementation, over 8,000 flora and fauna species
have been identified, of which 1,211 are listed in the World Red Book
and 324 are listed in Vietnam’s Red Book.
Identifying
endangered animals and plants helps scientists study different species,
subspecies and populations; preserve genetic resources; and create a
biodiversity database. In addition, the data can be used for
comprehensive forest protection measures and scientific research.-VNA
