According to director of the lake’s management board, Nguyen Xuan Thanh, untreated household wastewater directly discharged into the lake, and waste from fish farms, were initially blamed.

In order to keep the algae from spreading, the board has proposed building a biological lake to treat the waste before being discharged into the lake and remove fish farms in the near future.

The same type of algae has spread widely on Xuan Huong Lake – known as Da Lat’s “heart”, causing it to be seriously polluted for years.

Local efforts haven’t been able to prevent the spreading of algae and the unpleasant odour caused by the pollution.
