An area of 21,000 hectares surrounding the impending Long Thanh
International Airport, the largest in the country, in the southern
province of Dong Nai has been earmarked for development.
The plans for the area, which covers 12 communes of Long Thanh and
Cam My districts (excluding the 5,000-hectare airport), were
unveiled by the provincial People’s Committee to collect opinions from
local authorities on March 11 in the locality.
Under the plans, the area will be transformed into a prosperous
economic development zone to make full use of the economic benefits the
airport will create, according to the Dong Nai Construction Department.
Construction on the new airport is expected to
start in 2015. It will be operational by 2020 and capable of handling 25
million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo per annum. By 2030,
these figures are expected to reach 100 million passengers and 5 million
tonnes.
The airport will be able to receive large jumbo jets like the A380-800.-VNA
