HÀ NỘI — A musical production about xe ôm – a common means of transportation in Việt Nam – will be performed in Hà Nội on Friday night.
The 80-minute production tells a story about struggling to earn a living as a xe ôm driver. Despite the toil and drudgery of work, the driver is happy and his life is full of joy because of his family. The musical will feature students and teachers from the Hà Nội Academy of Theatre and Cinema.
“Xe ôm is popular in big Vietnamese cities,” said Park Nark-jong, the musical’s South Korean producer from Aksan company. “It is typical of Vietnamese culture in foreigners’ eyes. The musical will promote co-operation between Korea and Việt Nam in culture and art and deepen the relationship between the two countries.”
The script draws on the experiences and observations of Lee San in his nearly 10 years living in Việt Nam. He is a reporter at the Hà Nội–based Korean Association’s newspaper. Paul Yang’s musical pieces and visual effects promise an interesting performance with plenty of comedic moments.
This is the second collaboration between the Aksan company and the academy. Under the first project, the academy’s teachers and students were invited to attend a bilingual theatre festival in Korea.
The musical will begin at 7:30pm at the Việt Nam Institute of Musicology, CC2, Mễ Trì, Mỹ Đình New Urban Area. Free tickets can be picked up at the institute. — VNS
