HÀ NỘI — A portrait of coach Park Hang-seo painted by Trần Thế Vĩnh will be auctioned on December 30 at Chọn’s Auction House to celebrate Việt Nam’s football victory in the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup.

The auction will start at VNĐ117 million (US$5,000). According to Nguyễn Xuân Cường, director of Chọn’s Auction House, all proceeds will be used for charity work.

The entire nation was in ecstasy after the football team became champions of the AFF Cup, and people nationwide expressed their great love and respect for the team’s South Korean coach. Painter Vĩnh was no exception.

He finished the 73cm by 92cm oil painting Người Thầy Của Tôi (My Teacher) one week ago, drawing inspiration from the strong will of the team and the tactics of Coach Park.

“I was impressed by an image of Coach Park putting one hand on his chest and singing the national anthem, so I portrayed him against the background of the red national flag of Việt Nam,” said Vĩnh. “I highlighted his eyes and lips. In a portrait, these details can make the figure soulful.”

“Images of Park have been shared widely on newspapers and social networks,” Vĩnh said. “I also want to share the painting with other people. It will be auctioned for charity.”

“While painting Coach Park, I wanted to express my gratitude and admiration for his devotion to Vietnamese football.”

Vĩnh was born in 1986 in the central province of Quảng Trị. He graduated from Huế Fine Arts University in 2010. The painting will be on display at Chọn’s Auction House, 17 Trần Quốc Toản Street, Hà Nội starting on December 23. — VNS
