HÀ NỘI — A language festival will gather nine countries at Hà Nội Goethe Institute on Saturday to introduce diversity of European languages to local people at different ages.

This is the 8th European Languages Day (EDL) which was initiated by the Council of Europe and is now organised by the European Union National Institutes of Culture (EUNIC) every year aiming to promote multilingualism.

The EDL was first celebrated in 2001 and celebrated each 26 September. Every year, millions of people in the European member states and elsewhere organise or take part in activities to promote linguistic diversity and the ability to speak other languages.

This year’s participations include the Aula Cervantes and the British Council, as well as the embassies of France, Italy, Poland, Finland, Czech Republic, Wallonie-Bruxelles Delegration and the Goethe Institute.

At the 8th European Language Day, Hanoians can participate in half-hour classes guaranteed to get them speaking more fluently a new language – or at least a few words. The festival-goers will have chance to attend 30-minute lessons to learn a new language at the event. The lessons in German, English, Polish, Spanish, French, Czech, Italian and Finnish will have different slots meeting the demand of the learners.

Additionally, posters, brochures, lots of prices and lots of fun about Europe and its languages will be showcased. All family members are welcomed to the festival. The European Day of Language is open in the afternoon to anyone who is interested in experience on the diversity of European languages. There will be workshops and much more to explore.

Children can join to collage and drawing activities at the festival. A lucky draw will be held at the end of the event.

“English only is not enough,” said Polish deputy ambassador Szymon Vudarski at the press conference on Monday. “Speaking one more language which is not popular like Polish will help people have more job opportunity. Việt Nam and Poland have co-operated in education since 1950s and I hope that not only elderly Vietnamese people but Vietnamese young people also speak Polish.”

The deputy ambassador also said that Polish study course will be opened this year in Hà Nội.

The participating countries will also to introduce their education and study opportunities to the festival-goers. Please visit  facebook/EDL – European Day of Languages//Ngày ngôn ngữ Châu Âu for more information and register to attend the event on Saturday afternoon. — VNS
