Vietnamese students won more 11 gold medals on the third day of the fifth ASEAN School Games (AGS) on June 26.
The outstanding performance helped to place Vietnam first in the
scoreboard with 27 golds, 15 silvers and 10 bronzes.
As one of the world leaders in pencak silat, Vietnam dominated three out of six events in the morning.
Trio Vu Tien Dung, Nguyen Xuan Thanh and Nguyen Quoc Viet won in the
boy’s team category, leaving behind teams from Indonesia and Brunei.
Their teammates Nguyen Thi Huyen, Duong Thi Anh Nguyet and
Pham Thi Phuong also topped the podium minutes later after winning the
girl’s category.
It was the second gold medal for Huyen and Nguyet, who had earlier won the girl’s double pool.
In the swimming, Nguyen Thi Anh Vien proved herself as a title
collector, with two golds in the girls’ 400m and 800m freestyle.
The Can Tho city-based swimmer has now bagged eight of Vietnam’s nine swimming golds.
Four athletic golds went to Pham Ngoc Anh in javelin throwing, Vo
Bien Thanh Thu (women’s 3000m), Nguyen Thi Oanh (women’s 400m distance
race) and Nguyen Duc Chinh (men’s 100m).
At the end of the third
day, Malaysia and Thailand maintained their second and third
positions, respectively, on the board.-VNA
