The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has provided the central province
of Thua Thien-Hue with more than 710 million VND to help the province
plant more trees in its mangrove forests from 2012-2014.
It is part of the fund and province’s efforts to regenerate lost parts
of mangrove forest, to adapt to climate change and preserve the
biodiversity of coastal lagoons.
The WWF-funded
projects will see 23,000 trees planted on Ru Cha site of Huong Phong
commune, Huong Tra town, some areas in Tam Giang lagoon, both banks of
Huong River, and aquaculture lakes, with the aim to increase forest
acreage, safeguard anti-salinity dams and create
environmentally-friendly lakes.
Once planting is
expanded and forest belts are established along Tam Giang lagoon and
Huong River , they will be home to different kinds of larvae, a food
for aquatic species.
Over 400 households will benefit from sustainable aquatic farming and reduced flood risk.-VNA
