Minh keeps hold of 10th spot in world badminton rankings
Vietnamese badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh has retained the 10th place in the latest men’s rankings in the Badminton World Federation although he was ousted from the first round of the recent Asian Badminton Championships.
In the Australia Open Grand Prix Gold early this month, two-time Olympian Minh only reached the quarter-finals. He made the final match of the same event last year.
Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei still topped, followed by China’s Chen Long and Du Pengyu.
Vietnamese women footballers tie with Jordan
The Vietnam national women’s football team drew 1-1 in their friendly match against Jordan in Hanoi on April 26.
Jordan striker Maysa easily scored the first goal in the 14th minute of the first half but the hosts played better in the second half as their competitors began to show signs of fatigue.
Vietnam’s efforts proved successful when Nguyen Thi Lieu scored the tying goal in the final minutes of the game, getting the national women’s team off to a good start in the 2013 season.
National futsal competition to kick off in HCM City
The National Futsal Championship will begin on May 11 in HCM City.
The tournament, which will last until May 23, has attracted 12 strong teams, including the hosts, Thai Son Nam, Thai Son Bac, Sanatex Khanh Hoa, Asia Khanh Hoa and Dat Vinh Tien.
In preparation for the event, teams have honed their skills at the HCM City Open and Da Nang Open.
Quang Ninh hosts women’s beach volleyball tournament
Twelve teams from seven Asian countries and territories are participating in the Asian Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship 2013 in the northern province of Quang Ninh.They have been divided into four groups. The top team from each group will play in the semi-finals and final.
The four-day event, which will last until tomorrow, is part of the 2013 Ha Long Carnival and is also an official competition in the Asian Volleyball Confederation system.
Thao to be sole Vietnamese athlete at Asian Grand Prix
The Viet Nam Athletics Federation (VAF) has announced that Do Thi Thao will be the only Vietnamese athlete to compete at the upcoming Asian Grand Prix in Thailand.
Thao will take part in the women’s 800m event.
Earlier, the Asian Athletics Association invited six Vietnamese athletes to compete but the VAF decided to choose only three athletes, Vu Thi Huong (women’s 100m), Duong Thi Viet Anh (women’s high jump) and Thao for the event.
However, Huong and Anh haven’t been recovered from injuries so they will not travel to the event.
The tournament’s first meet takes place in Bangkok, Thailand, on May 4, followed by Chonburi on May 8 and finishing in Colombo, Sri Lanka on May 12.
