VietNamNet Bridge – To make use of vacant space on the terrace, some Saigonese have built bonsai gardens worth hundreds of US dollars.
The 60sq.m terrace of the three-storey house of Mr. Dao Thanh in Tan
Phu district has about 1,000 bonsai pots, with a total value of VND3-4
billion ($150,000-200,000).
Thanh has worked very hard in this “garden” for three to four years, four to five hours every day.
He set up a pulley system to carry bonsai pots from the ground to the roof.
Mr.
Cong, a gardener in Tan Phu district, also has a bonsai garden on the
roof, with more than 200 pots on only the 30m2 terrace. With over 10
years of experience, Cong has won numerous awards at home and abroad.
This
bonsai pot won the Gold Prize at the Hue Festival 2014. It is priced at
over VND100 million ($5,000). Cong’s bonsai garden’s worth is estimated
at approximately VND1 billion ($50,000).
Bonsai trees on the roof require special care because the heat and wind on the rooftop are stronger than on the ground.
At the height of 20-50 m, fixing bonsai pots is very important.
To have a nice bonsai pot worth VND20-40 million ($1,000-2,000), gardeners have to spend two to three years.
According to the HCM City Ornamental Tree Growers’ Association, there are more than 100 rooftop bonsai gardens in the city.
