VietNamNet Bridge – In addition to its old houses, Duong Lam in the Son Tay district of Hanoi has many wells with a long history.
1939 is the year of construction carved on the wall of the ancient
well in He village, but locals say that it was the year that the well
was repaired. Behind the wall is a pond. The water level in the well is
always higher than that in the pond.
Water from this well is very good for making tea.
The ancient well in Phu Village is called the right eye of the dragon
and locals are allowed to use the water for cooking only. The well was
repaired in 1958. The water is always pure and the well has never gone
dry, even in times of drought. On the fifth day of the lunar year, each
family in the village sends a representative to bring offerings to the
well and to pray for prosperity and peace.
Another old well in Phu Village is called the left eye of dragon. The water from this well is used for bathing and washing.
Near the ancient well of Sui Village is a stele reminding people to keep the well clean.
The water in this well is clear because the well is dug through laterite layers.
The
communal house of Mong Phu Village was built under the reign of Emperor
Le Hy Tong (1684). This well was dug to serve the construction. Mrs. Ha
Thi Vin, 86, says: “The well water is clear all year round. Villagers
only use the water for cooking, not for washing”.
