The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has committed 3.5 million USD in financial support for forest biodiversity conservation in Thua Thien-Hue.

Under the cooperation document between the two sides, the money will be used to carried out six projects in the locality, including a carbon and biodiversity (Carbi) programme in Sao La Nature Reserve, the expanded area of Bach Ma National Park, and the green corridor in Nam Dong and A Luoi districts, and a project to enhance public role in preservation work in the central area of Truong Son Mountain Range.

Besides, WWF has committed financial aid of 105,000 USD for the implementation of the Green Annamites project in the locality.

Meeting with Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Dung on April 9, WWF Regional Director for Asia-Pacific Prasanna De Silva said his organisation will help the province with the Carbi programme during 2019-2023, hoping that the local authority will soon approve the project so that it can be kicked off in May 2019.

Dung, for his part, thanked WWF’s support for the province in the past time while affirming that the WWF’s projects have helped the locality preserve forest biodiversity in the context of climate change, and created sustainable livelihoods for people in the projects’ areas.

He pledged to urge competent departments and sectors to assess the projects and submit to the provincial People’s Committee for approval.

The province is carrying out the “Green Sunday” project to raise public awareness of environmental protection, he said, expressing his hope for WWF’s engagement in this scheme in the coming time.-VNA
