Plan International Vietnam held a meeting to review the project on building a safe city for girls in Hanoi jointly carried out by the organisation and Vietnam’s management agencies.
Le Quynh Lan from the organisation said that over the past four years, up to VND17.32 billion (USD772,727) had been spent on the project, bringing positive results.
The rate of girls facing sexual harassment on buses in Vietnam has considerably decreased over the past four years.
A survey by the organisation conducted in June 2013 showed that 31% of 1,128 interviewed girls said they had been sexually harassed on buses, while, only 13% thought they felt safe at public places.
Meanwhile, up to 45% of surveyed passengers said that they ignored what happened at public places which did not relate to them. Up to 20% admitted that they did nothing when they saw girls sexually harassed on buses.
After the four-year implementation of the project, the rate of girls suffering from sexual harassment has fallen to 19%. The rate of people who do not intervene in the sexual harassment on buses has also decreased to 9%.
The organisation has co-operated with many units to organise training courses for bus drivers and conductors on sexual harassment prevention for girls. The project has also issued a handbook for girls when travelling by bus.
Most of the drivers at the training courses pledged to ensure safety for girls.
Plan International Vietnam are considering expanding the project to seven other localities.
