Group C consists of a murderer’s row of regional powerhouses, with the Vietnamese set to face South Korea, Australia and Jordan.

South Korea are twelve-time champions, Australia have always been strong since joining the Asian Confederation, while Jordan are about the same level as Việt Nam.

After the draw yesterday in Indonesia, the Việt Nam Football Federation confirmed that the team would receive strong support to have good result in Indonesia and have no set target.

VFF General Secretary Lê Hoài Anh said: “It is a group of strong teams and it will be competitive. The Vietnamese players will be supported greatly. We hope they can make the quarter-finals but if not they will definitely gain experience for future tournaments.”

The team, who are currently in Hà Nội, will train at Evergrande FC’s football school in China next month. They will then compete at the Southeast Asian championship in early July. A training camp in Europe is scheduled after that.

At the previous edition two years ago in Bahrain, Việt Nam earned a berth in the semi-finals to qualify as one of five Asian representatives at the 2017 U20World Cup.

In other groups, hosts Indonesia will face the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Chinese Taipei in Group A. Defending champions Japan take on Thailand, North Korea and Iraq in Group B. Two-time champions Saudi Arabia are against with Tajikistan, China and Malaysia in Group D.

The tournament will begin on October 18 and wrap up on November 4.
