The Vietnamese athlete defeated Jialanai Luang Amath of the hosts 21-8, 21-10 in the third round. He will next play Malaysian Faiz Rozain.

Another Vietnamese player, Nguyen Hai Dang, also joined Cuong in this round. He won 21-11, 21-6 against Kachain Buarung of Thailand, and will now face No 4 Kantawat Leelavechabutr, also of Thailand.

Viet Nam’s Le Duc Phat, No 3 seed, beat Muhammad Sufiyuddin Mohamed Shafei of Malaysia 21-15, 21-15. He will play No 8 seed Mek Narongrit, another Thai player, in the next round.

The women’s category saw No 1 Nguyen Thuy Linh through to the quarter-finals after beating Nuntakarn Aimsaard from Thailand yesterday.

She is the only Vietnamese female player left at the tournament. Her teammates Vu Thi Anh Thu and Tran Thi Phuong Thuy were eliminated in the second round.
