VietNamNet Bridge – Transport businesses will be assigned star ratings to evaluate the quality of their services as part of a transport management project proposed recently by the Directorate for Roads of Viet Nam.

Vehicles running on fixed routes, as well as tour vehicles and rental cars, will be scored by a council from 1-100, said deputy director of the Directorate for Roads of Viet Nam Nguyen Van Quyen. The scoring council will take into account vehicle quality, drivers, routes, management and customer interest when determining the scores, which will then be converted to stars. For instance, businesses that receive between 90-100 points will be given five stars.

Four- and five-star businesses will be encouraged to develop and expand their market, while low-quality businesses will have to operate on shorter routes with fewer vehicles, he said.

“The ranking is expected to help improve transport businesses’ service quality and create conditions for passengers to choose appropriate transport companies,” Quyen said.

Most transport businesses lacked adequate management, leading to low-quality services and traffic accidents, said Head of the Directorate for Roads of Viet Nam’s Department of Legal Transport Tran Quang Binh.

Meanwhile, shortcomings remained in State management of transport businesses due to the lack of human resources and weak professional skills of those working in the sector, Binh said.

He expressed optimism about the new rating system, hoping it would encourage transport businesses to improve their services.

The number of transport vehicles in the country has increased rapidly, with nearly 103,000 coaches and 620,000 trucks.

Nearly 2,700 businesses, as well as 586 co-operatives and thousands of households, have registered transport businesses.

The rating will later be applied for buses and taxis.

If approved, the project will be implemented between 2013-2015.
